Hey Guys, I'm still learning how to weld properly. Have been self taught for a few years. I was not ever happy with my welds so I enrolled in Technical school (We call that TAFE in Australia). I've been getting better, but no where near a 'good' welder. Originally I was going to buy some box tube, but some builders dumped some galvanised temporary fencing behind my house, So I thought I'd re-use that, since I hate waste. I had to cut it all up and discard the bent pieces. Just used an angle grinder. Started building the frame. The idea was to be have a portable workbench, and somewhere to house my MIG and TIG with my argon and argosheild bottles. I'm fairly tall and always struggle with low benches so I wanted something high that I could easily work on. I learnt a lot on this project. I learnt how to notch how not to notchwhat happens when your notches are not a tight fit. How a frame can warp from too much heat input. How to manage heat input on the frame to minimise distortionThe importance of prepping dirty material before welding The limitations of my mig welder and how to properly set it upAmongst many things. Not everything turned out as I expected on this project. using Tube was probably a big ask for a first project, and I realise that now, but by the time i was on the last few tube welds I was getting pretty clean, good looking welds. The top of the table is 6mm, and should be plenty thick enough for the work I do and plan to do.  I have a few more mods to make to this table, but for now, I'm just happy that my TIG is no longer sitting on the floor and I can actually cart it around to use it.
Reply:Glad it worked out this time, next time throw that galvanized crap in the scrap bin. Nasty stuff.
Reply:Looks very nice.Yeah just be aware of the safety concerns of welding on galvi, especially in an enclosed shop if the ventilation isn't excellent. If you get a good does it will make you very sick. I've used a bit of that stuff in the past and done a few repairs on it. Welding outside is always a good idea even though it causes issues with gas mig. I also always wear a respirator as well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:ah fair enough. It wasn't bad at all. And it was 1.6mm thick, which was not thin walled at all. Pretty thick. I understand the concern though. Thanks!
Reply:Originally Posted by TSCGG13That would be my reasoning. I won't weld on the crap. It's just plain nasty. To me, thin walled stuff like that is useless, but if you can use it by all means, but for ME it isn't worth sacrificing any of my health for saving a few bucks.
Reply:Looks good. Projects built from scrap are always the most challenging and rewarding. You did a good job fitting your design into the materials on hand. You'll likely use this cart for many years. Proof is in the function. Keep at it and post up some more projects.
