With Ukraine getting a few headlines lately it got me thinking about being over there on a construction project two years ago.  Thought these pictures may be of interest to some.Cutting torch.  Lack of a lever for cutting O2 must be a PITA.  Have to manually turn a valve. This is the only type of electrode holder I saw; a few bent rods and a couple rolls of electrical tape.  Must have been hot on the hands.Common practice.  Burning and grinding without eye protection.  I think I had the only pair of safety glasses in the plant.Choke it!  Choke it!  I wanted to choke the rigging boss.  Seemed all he knew was basket lifts.  Moving a small stub column onto transfer buggy.Turfers are handy for pulling columns plumb.  Don’t have a solid anchor?  No problem, just use the handle on a switchroom door.
Reply:When raising some of the columns, the overhead crane could not get directly overhead.  The cables scuffed on the steel for the complete lift.  By the time I left, the flange was completely smooth.  I didn’t want to look at the cable.A sheave block was needed for a couple lifts but there wasn’t one available.  Making one on site from some scraps laying around only took a few hours.A storage container.  For oxygen and grease.  Nuff said! This one has nothing to do with the project.  My favorite neighbour from up the street.  I just called her the babushka lady.PaulLast edited by NorOnt; 03-18-2014 at 10:11 PM.
Reply:You thought it was bad then! It was bad, now it's worse.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:So besides bitching and taking pictures, what were you there for?  Just giving ya crap, but seriously how did you get involved in that ordeal?
Reply:Thanks for sharing, it is always fun to see how they do it now. It seems like it is often how we used to do it.

Reply:Thanks for the pics, hard to believe the third world mentality still goes on in the construction industry. If dont mind me askin what kind if numbers for manpower and lost time injuries were on thst job? Thanks again for pics.
Reply:No lost time injuries on a job like that, if you get hurt and you listened carefully you heard the boss fire you right before, so no employee ever gets hurt. Mr. HE

Reply:There is something to be said for the " get it done" attitude. When I see things like this, I think of some of the stuff we accomplished in WWII with little or nothing. The fight to save the light cruiser USS Houston or the salvage of the fleet at Pearl come to mind right away, just to name a few. In some ways it's sad that we lost that attitude somewhere along the way. The ability to find ways to get things done even if we didn't have the right tools on hand, because we had to. I'm not sure with the "everything must be perfectly safe" mentality some have today, we could accomplish the same things.Having said that, what's shown is just insane. Basic safety isn't all that hard to use, and it usually starts with common sense. Some of what I see there doesn't make a lot of sense....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I agree 100% I will start a thread tonight or tmrw of job changing warerwall panels here where I'm at right now, tonight we start putting new panels  in syclone boiler really nice to see different rigging practices good or bad to learn from.  That basket on thst beam makes my head hurt lol good day everybody
Reply:Thanks for the pics.  It is interesting to see how other country's and people work.  Makes you really be thankful for some of those pesky government regulations. Also we have to remember it wasn't that long ago those of us in the United States worked under the same conditions.  Just think of the Hoover Dam and the callus disregard for human life.
Reply:In 2009 I helped load a jack up rig on to a heavy transport vessel in the Bay of Avina at the Southern tip of Sakhalin Island, Russia.   The scaffolding crew were all locals.  Thank god for then rig safety officer because they tried to get a way with some pretty iffy things at first.   At the completion of the job I got stuck in Yuhzno for several days waiting on a flight out.   Got to walk around the city playing Tourist during the day and saw a lot of construction work getting done very similar to those pictures from the Ukraine.    Saw a guy trying to weld some pipe with a stringer like the one shown and a really small jury rigged hand held shield.   He was getting some really horribly results.
Reply:Thank you very much for your post with the photos.

Reply:Babushka lady looks pretty good for being in her early 40's.We hosted a refugee family from the Ukraine when George Sr. was in office and the husband showed us photos from home and asked me to guess the ages of some of their neighbors.  It was quite startling to know folks that looked to be 70-80yo were only in the 50's.  Rough life for most to say the least.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
