so me and my buddy were checkin out his quad thinkin of some things that we could do to it, hes got a 2013 Arctic Cat XC 450i, i say we can build a muffler for it...get some loudness and maybe a little performance. so off to the steel shop we go, got some 14ga 304, the body or can of the muffler is an equalatteral 60* triangle, just for looks. bout 15in long by 3.75 on each side. i didnt use backpurge to weld this up, just an 8 cup with a lens at 15cfh, 1/16th thoriated, two strands of .030 308L mig wire twisted in a drill. the end cap on the outlet end is 3 panels raised up for a cooler look, i may machine a special outlet on the lathe for it. i didnt do the math to compensate for the angle change but it turned out fine. i may add a dimple died heat shield or i may have some pieces cut out to weld to the side of the body. not sure yet. it will have steel wool for the packing. ive had good luck with that in the past. anyway its a work in progress but im pretty happy with the results so far. amps are set at 120, 33pps, buddy says i hit 38amps using the pedal...Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:forgot to mention that the pipe inside the muffler will be 1 and a quarter inches diameter, the stock header is 1.5in, so in order to keep some back pressure and not have to get a fuel programmer im hoping that chokin the pipe down a little will give the desired performance, hopefully it will have some sort of gain whether its low mid or high. the stock muffler is 4in round can kinda like a turbo style muffler, with the wall inside and a couple pipes feeding the seperated chambers. no packing in the stock muffler, we started the wheeler with the stock muffler off and wow, its loud, thats what he wants. stock it sounds like a normal utlity wheeler you would hunt with or plow the driveway lol. not coolMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication

Reply:its awesome, i cant live without it now....nice thing about em is you dont have to order stubby kits to run the 9 style cups and what not, you just buy a 2 series head and it goes right on, then you use all the 9 parts, little bit cheaper.Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:This is a sweet idea. And hey, if it does not work you just swap the old one on. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Reply:personally I hate loud ATV's. I get the performance gains of it, but most people just want them to be loud and obnoxious. which in turn just looks bad on the sport for the people that just have to listen to it. but to each their own I guess. nice work so far. There are no problems. Reply:Yeah thats why I chose to pack it with steel wool as not to be obnoxious. I used to like loud open headers but got older and decided that I liked mufflers my favorite is spintech mufflers amazing performance gain over open exhaust.....the difference between a solid 2-3 shift at 70mph to a loud bark and rubber on the ground at 70mph. Truly amazing for just a muffler installMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication

Reply:There is a difference in volume too though.  If it is the harsh or raspy type of noise I really don't care for it.  If it is the low, deep rumble of something with a large displacement.... that is different. Reply:Looks good!
Reply:14ga? damn... why so thick?I woulda used 18gaWelding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:i chose 14ga because of resonance frequency, at certain rpms a thinner metal will produce a tinny sound. little thicker and it absorbs the resonance frequency better, less tinnyMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
