If so, what would be the good ideas, and the ones that were not so good. Thanks
Reply:I made mine from a 4" inline booster fan for a HVAC system (duct work booster blower).I used a plastic (square dog food container) 3'x2'x4' Mounted the booster fan inside this and left the exhaust end sticking through the plastic container. Then mounted it on a piece of sheet tin after putting standard dryer vent flange through the tin. .Then got the silver flexible exhaust dryer hose for the intake and exhaust mounted this in the rafters of the garage, vented exhaust to outside. I used a clothes line to adjust the hose where I want it/need it. 3 lines going across the garage rafters towards the garage doors and 3 lines going the opposite direction. Isn't a spot so far I cant reach, except for the I need to get another piece of vent tubing for the reach. Uses a ring around the vent tube and a simple D ring to attach it to the line, and a clothes pin for fine tuning ( stop it at the right place). In a couple of my posts you can see it hanging from the garage ceiling.Last edited by STwelder; 03-21-2009 at 03:24 AM.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready

Reply:I have since picked up a used extractor on craigslist, but in a pinch I have used the good old Rigid shop vac with a flex hose connected to the blow/exhaust port out the window and a flexible metal exhaust pipe for a car slid over the shop vac hose so the sparks and spatter didn't burn it up. It works surprisingly well and is quite portable. Just have to hook up a mount, magnetic base works good, My son used to put on a welding hood and hold mine for me. Also a good flex hose can be made from a pool vacum hose, 25 and 50 foot lengths can be had cheap."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:I bought a sawdust collector from Harbor frieght and the 4" hose kit.   total cost $150.00.  Vented it out the window and garbage can lid for hood.  It works!David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Very good and economical ideas from all!  Thanks for the replies.  They all have helped.
Reply:I put a box fan in a window and opened the garage door a bit.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:Building an exhaust system is common sense. If you are looking to clean the air, you'll have to invest some money. If you just want to dump it somewhere that you're not, use exhaust. Graingers has a decent extractor for a "better" price than most."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.

Reply:I have a general question on these.  Does the extraction movement of air have any effect on shielding gases while you are welding?Charlie

Reply:I did a project to create a small spray booth in my basement. I use a small box fan then cut a circle in a flat piece of steel sheet and welded on a 1.5 in tall collar to mate with 6" round dryer duct. After that I piped it out of the basement just like a dryer vent. This was then mounted to a epoxy coated wood booth about 20x30 inches with a double stacked furnace filter. It works great. The fans cost about $50.Midwest Metal ProductsMetal Wire Forming Fan Guards Delta-Larm
Reply:I just have a stove range hood above my welding table vented out through the wall, with the fan on the high setting it sucks the smoke and fumes out quite well. The light also comes in handy when clamping & positioning work.Only cost $40.
Reply:blower from a hot air oil furnace worked for a friend spraying paint.
