well ive been wanting a small lathe for some time and haven't got one yet. i found a lil old atlas that's missing parts but maybe rehabable but i don't know a whole lot about lathes so i figured i would ask to see what i might be getting myself into bringing an old machine back  and finding parts  http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/tls/2090356135.html  lemme know what ya think while im not in phx my brother is so i could have him pick it up for me until i get up to get it 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:No chuck? No tailstock?  I wouldn't give much for it.  I have a 1950-1960ish craftsman (atlas I think) with chuck, tailstock, centers, etc that I gave $100 for.  I thought that was a little high since the lathe is pretty much worn out.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Make a good "parts" machine if you had a twin but personally I'd pass and keep looking.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Keep looking. The missing tailstock and lack of tooling would jump the price up into the area of a better candidate for your money. Atlas utilized Zamak cast-metal gears in this model and they were none too robust to begin with. Price is low enough and if you want to hunt down parts, do necessary clean-up, etc. you'll have a small lathe with a rather narrow work envelope that won't give you a lot of tooling you can re-use when you trade up in the future.EDIT: I don't see any change gears, other than what is on the lathe now.
Reply:I'd pass on it. My guess is the cash you'll have to put into it will be greater than the cost of a complete one. Besides, it looks kinda small, you'd out grow it quickly. Get ready for sticker shock when you start pricing out the tooling.   If you can find a sale that includes tooling, you'll be ahead of the game. my $0.02.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:thanks guys i was leaning toward a 9x20 Chinese model to start with  unless i got lucky and found a good atlas or south bend figured it probably wouldn't be worth it but thought i would ask since im no machinist.......... yet350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Keep an eye out for larger sized lathes in your area. The actual footprint won't be all that much larger, but you'll weed out a lot of potential buyers wanting the smallest lathe they can fit in their shop...which, unless you are a jeweler, makes about as much sense as using a 16 oz. hammer for busting pavement. Price goes down for the larger machines as well, again due to less demand. You can oftentimes find far more features, versatility, quality and heavy cast iron rigidity in the larger than 'cult' sized lathes...for less money.
Reply:I have been looking for a while.  After pricing out things, it became obvious that it's better to spend a little more up front for a machine that comes with what you are looking for.  I just put a deposit on an 11" Logan.  It was a little more than I was planning on spending but it comes with a lot of accessories and the guy knows it's my first lathe, so he's going to give me a bunch of extra tooling.  Now I just have to find some time to go pick it up.
Reply:anyone ever heard of a timken brand lathe theres a guy selling one on cl he says the previous owener said it a timken and it has a tag that says that tryed searching but all i get is bearings ?350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off

Reply:Could it be that the manf. of the lathe was proudly advertising that his lathe had ball or roller bearings.   Lots of old lathes had brass, bronze or babbit metal bearings.  Even after ball and roller bearings were more common some of the lower end equipment manf. avoided their use for cost reasons."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:It's worth waiting to find something you want.  I have been looking for over two months now.  Check other areas that you may be willing to travel to.  I put a deposit on the Logan below, but have conversed with and e-mailed the guy quite a bit.  Just trying to work out some time to go get it.  He seems happy that it's going to someone that's getting started instead of someone looking to part it out.  I think I'm getting a pretty good deal for what I'm paying for it.  I have looked at accessories and they definitely add up.  I think the only thing it doesn't really have is a quick change tool post, but I can pick one of those up.  I'm excited and should have it by the end of the month.  I check CL pretty much all day when I want something specific.  Obsessive...maybe, but I can usually end up getting what I think is a good deal. Reply:First rule in machining.  NEVER leave the chuck key in the chuck.

Reply:Kaz, I have one that is almost a sister to yours, mine is 1957 model. I don't have the follow or steady rest, but have a 8" 4 jaw and face plate with a bunch of dogs. I love that little machine, I need to replace the cross feed screw, it has some pretty bad backlash, I am considering going with precision ball screws on x and y and converting it to cnc.Do not go where the path may lead, instead go where there is no path and leave a trail.
