Well it's not all been bad luck around here. Besides the house burning I've had my tractor trying to mess up, my cordless drill break, and a few other things besides (it gets depressing thinking about it all).  However the last couple of days I've had some good luck come my way.  First is some items I got in trade. I did a fairly simple aluminum weld job on a trailer the other day. Took less than 1 hour to finish including getting out the push pull welder, hooking it up, and putting it away. In trade I got the first three pics.   First pic is a chop saw I've been lusting after since the first day I saw it. It's a Brilliant model BDM51-8441V. I was told the motor was bad. Not a problem for me since I can slap a 3 phase motor on it. However I got a chance at the end of work today to do some investigating. I'm fairly sure that there's nothing wrong with the motor. I'll have to wire a permanent plug on the cord for me to be sure but it did spin right up with my cheater cord wired directly to the motor. Investigation of the wiring showed a couple of problems. First was a wire in the motor box that wasn't connected or insulated. It comes from a light that's supposed to light up when the saw is being pushed to hard (from what I can tell). The other really major problem was that the plug was wired wrong. It had a twist lock plug on it and after checking it out I found that the ground wire (hooked directly to the motor case) was connected to what's supposed to be a hot prong on the plug. That might explain why the saw didn't have power and would shock you.   Along with the saw (the real prize in my eye) is a drill bit sharpener. I've used this sharpener before. It came from my former employers auction. It was bought before anybody realized that it was 3 phase so the purchaser was never able to use it.   Next (and least to me) is a welder was thrown into the bargain. I don't believe it works though I might be able to fix it if I wanted to.   The last pic is of a drill I managed to get. While looking for parts for my cordless drill I got to checking out what would be a good companion drill for it. Since my drill is a 14.4 volt Dewalt hammer drill that I got at auction for $50 and then fixed (it's taken some really bad abuse by us and just keeps going) I wanted the same voltage in a none hammer drill. I checked all the models and found the one l liked. I decided to do a search on the model number to find the best price. Thus I found a pawn shop with a online listing. They showed to have the very model I was looking for. The price was definitely right so I decided to see was other drills they might have. After looking through the rather large list I decide to get two drills. After check out it was determined that the one I was really wanting had already been sold. However the second model was available. With shipping it cost me a grand total of $36. It came with one battery, and the charger. I don't know how good the battery is but it took a charge well enough. I'll have to check it's life in use. The drill itself is in pretty good shape overall with only a slight burn smell coming from the motor. My drill with the same motor has been overheated many times and just keeps going and if the motor does give up then it's just around $35 to replace it. Reply:good scores!  You deserve some good luck after the fire and all. As an electrician I see all kinds of crazy hookups by people. Most common is people who change a 3 way switch but only purchase a single pole switch. They don't know what to do with that third wire, so they usually attach it to the grounding screw Let us know how that motor works out.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:Update on the saw and stuff. After wiring it this morning I found not problems at all. It worked perfectly. Thus we ended up spending the day cleaning and reorganizing so as to make a place for it. After moving the old saw out and putting the new saw in place I had my helpers work on the welder while I wired in the new saw. After blowing out the welder and putting a plug on it we tried it out. It welded fine for a AC machine. Since I didn't need it I gave it to one of the helpers.   We did managed to do some organizing in the area around the saw. It's still tight back there and lots of cleanup left in the shop but a lot of it will have to wait for the addition on the shop. I did manage to make some slide out supports for stock in the saw which you can see in the second pic. The last pic shows a piece of dirt that we haven't been able to see for 8 months now.
