I'm building a fab table using 1" x 24" x 48" carbon steel plate. This table will be used in my home garage/shop and will be used to fab auto/motorcycle brackets, work table frames, and general home shop projects.I'm currently using the concrete floor in the shop as a "fab table" and it's no funI'm assuming the raw plate won't be particularly flat and will need to be machined.I intend to farm this job out as my 10x54 mill is a little small for this piece but obviously I want the most bang for my buck.So the question is, how flat should this table top be and what methods would you recommend...blanchard ground, face milled, surface ground?Any idea as to how much I should expect to pay?BTW...I live in Houston, Tx so if you know of anyone local you'd recommend let me know. Thanks guys.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
Reply:Depends how flat you want it. If you start with something perfectly flat then at least you know your project should come out better. You might be surprised how flat a piece may be from the mill. I have a piece of 3'x5' 1 1/4" that has a  1/32" bow to it lengthwise. I used this to build a modular table which is all welded up and needs to be heat stress relieved then blanchard ground. From what I have found out it is cheaper to have it blanchard ground since the whole setup is basically just for doing that and they don't have to retool anything such as mills. I would do some searching for blanchard grinding facilities in your area. I am guessing there are several. Where I am at the nearest place to handle the 3' x 5' piece I have whether it be milling or grinding is still 450 miles away so I have to plan a couple day trip there. You can also contact these places and see if they have any pieces laying around already done similar in size. First go to steel supplier with a straight edge and pick out a piece that might be flat enough for your needs then have them cut it. With that thick of piece it shouldn't warp from heat doing the cut.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week
Reply:Blanchard grinding will be the least expensive, but cost will depend on the amount of material that needs to be removed to get it flat.  A 20 x 36 piece cost me $90 a couple years ago in Dayton, Ohio.  You might consider grinding the plate and then bolting it to a frame.  The grinding will be cheaper (it can be ground on a magnetic chuck with no fixturing) and you'll avoid the distortion from welding.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:Personally, I wouldn't worry about grinding it.  If it's reasonably flat it should do for what you're using it for.I have a 4' x 5' table made with a 1/4" top, and it's out by maybe 1/8" over it's entire surface.  When using it to tack something that has to be right on I use simple track like fixtures which sit on the surface of the table, and I shim them to obtain a planar dimension.  It's very easy. Also realize that merely having a flat true surface is only half the battle.  Even the most perfectly fitted and tacked weldment will be subject to distortion once the finish welding commences Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:It is only a welding table it is going to be flat enough without getting it machined at all, it isnt a surface plate or a marking out table, it will get marked straight away welding on it.
