so I got a wire feeder that will run off my aead 200le. the wire is flux cored .035 e71t-11 from tsc. what amps should I start out with on 5/32 metal?Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)
Reply:More info. What type of feeder? Are you running in CV or CC off that machine? "Mig" is a Constant Voltage process, so you don't use "amps" to set the machine. The exception is voltage sensing feeders that can be run off CC machines. We'll get to those in a minute. Some engine drives are CC/CV. If you can, you want to run wire in CV mode. You will have more luck. Now VS feeders off CC machines. A VS feeder mimics CV by constantly changing the wire speed to attempt to maintain a constant voltage even though the power source is putting out Constant Current. This doe not work well with typical "short arc" mig because the feeder can't change speeds fast enough to keep up with the arc shorting out. To work well, you need to get up closer to spray mode. The down side to spray is that it's a high heat process and not well suited for thin metal that most people think of typically with mig. Up side is FC wire goes into spray sooner than solid wire, so Fc wire runs a bit better off CC with a VS feeder. 5/32" is pretty close to 1/8" and that's very thin for running FC wire off a VS feeder in CC mode. Turn the heat down and the feeder may start to have issues feeding wire correctly and maintaining an arc. Crank it up so it will run well, and it may be too hot for stuff that thin. I wouldn't generally recommend wire off a CC power source for material less than 1/4" on average due to the heat. Down side 2 to spray is the puddle is very liquid, so out of position welds like vertical and overhead can be a real PITA to do..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:the feeder is a chemetron 50s, there is a thread in the machines section with pics.or I think it is that one, might be the free welder thread in projects section. anyway the aead is a cc machine and the feeder connects directly to the leads coming from it.Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)

Reply:I just read the thread on your "free" welder. I'm pretty sure that is a standard CV shop feeder not a voltage sensing feeder, but some of the guys with more experience on older Hobart stuff can probably tell you for sure. VS feeders have an extra small ground clamp that the feeder uses t sense the voltage to make adjustments. If your feeder doesn't have one, assume it's not a VS type feeder and that it will not run off a CC machine correctly. If your AEAD will allow you to run in CV mode, you might have a chance. However most CV shop feeders require some sort of control cable connection to the power source. Without this connection they won't run right. Again I'm not sure about an older unit like this. You may not need the extra cable connection if the unit is very basic..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:yes the unit is very basic. the lead from the power source connects where the gun attaches to the feeder and the feed rolls run off a separate 115vac cord.Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)
Reply:Looking at the manual for your AEAD, I'm pretty sure it's a CC only unit. A VS type feeder will be your only option to run wire.Right now without more info, I doubt the combo you have will work. Oh BTW just in case your feeder is a VS type, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN IT OFF AC ! You will fry a VS feeder if you do..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I don't think it is a vs feeder. I was gonna google it and see if I can find some info on it.Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)
Reply:ok well I was trying to work with the feeder I got yesterday and seem to have welded the wire to the tip that screws into the gun, how do I find what size tip to go get?Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)
Reply:Tip is based on wire size you are using, and the gun that is in the feeder. My guess is though, you'll do it again as soon as you replace the tip. I'm pretty sure that feeder isn't designed to run off a CC power source..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Depends how bad you fused the tip. At the tech school some times I can get the tips cleaned up by loosening the wire drive and pulling off the tip and cut the wire with a few inches behind the tip. Then I can try and grind/sand the metal off the tip and tap on the wire to free it if they didn't melt the tip too bad. At worst the tip is junk anyways. Be careful, you don't want to grind the tip any more than you have to. The grinder can smear wire in the hole and make it feed poorly or not at all. Tip cleaners for OA torches can some times help clean up the hole if it dose smear some.At school the real PITA is the new Benard guns. I've got plenty of tips for the tweeco style guns, but the new Benard guns on the new feeders, we don't have spare tips at night. I have to clean the tips or have the student switch machines if we have an open one..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:well I tried to grind the tip a little no luck and tractor supply didn't have any that big, so I guess I will have to wait till Monday  and get one from my local welding supply houseLincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)

One has to wonder what job site management was thinking, the cost of our labor to save a contact tip, or the cost of a new tip.
Reply:I learned on that job to keep some tips in an old socket case in the bottom of my welder's bucket. I've also worked for outfits where they treated clear lenses like they were made of gold. The whip came unplugged , broke the wire and come back and knocked him on his a$$ . That was some pretty funny $hit.
