Hi all I have a 3200 hd and Im needing to do some butt welds on 13g steel. Will this do it with solid wire and 75/25% mix?
Reply:Single sided and single pass?  Kind of iffy.Double sided, with a little beveling prep of the edges beforehand with a flap disc or a grinder wheel?  Probably.Using 0.035 FC wire, sure.
Reply:its going to be an oil tank so one side only..I didnt wanna do flux because of the nastyness it makes
Reply:Here is a pic of the oil tank halves. Like I said they are 13g steel and the edges are beveled. I guess I could always tack em and then have someone tig em for me
Reply:Oil tank, as in not really pressurized and not being beat on or around? You might not get 100% complete penetration welds, but if that is sufficient for the task and your skill is up to putting good consistent beads in, then go for it.  You'll have to tack it first no matter what in order to hold the pieces together and not walk or warp all over the place as it's welded. To see how the penetration is, do some test butt welds on some 13 gauge material beveled like your 'real' piece is and look at the welds.BTW, what is the size/scale of that tank?  The picture gives no indication of how big the item is, it could be 1 inch in diameter or 10 feet in diameter.
Reply:Its 5 inches wide 9 inches long, its for a rigid frame motorcycle, so itll take a beating. Im gonna tack it up and have someone tig it I think
