Reply:Get some scrap 2x4 and plywoodFigure out how long you want it so you can drive on.Figure out the wheel spacing of both machines.Put supports  under the wheels.Go to a trailer dealership and eyeball / measure some actual ones.Make your plans from there.
Reply:12345678910 beat me to where I was going. I would say the two most important things are length which will become especially important for clearance when loading the mower, and making sure you have your braces set on the tire width of the machines you load on it if you are planning on construction it with expanded metal. Do you do have any sort of welding experience at all? This seems like a good project to start on if not! There are people that weld these up everyday who might as well have not ever seen a welder before in there life as far as they know. You could get it inspected by Weldingweb for free also.SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder
Reply:Maybe there's a member here who is close to Pittsburgh who could come help you build it?  You are 15 hours from my shop so no go here.

Reply:Any decent shop should be able to take a few quick measurements and whip you up one in short order or as stated make it yourself using the one in the photo as an example.REAL TRUCKS DON'T HAVE SPARK PLUGS
Reply:yes i have done some welding, my problem is the hinges i would be afraid that if i didn't get enough penetration that on our smooth highways and roads here in pgh that the welds wouldn't hold up to the abuse. we travel 300 miles round trip to camp and i would hate to loose it especially on the highway.thanks for the advice.
Reply:I still think you should try it! Nothing to it at all. You could post pictures and if we felt like it would not hold you could nail the hinges on.SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder

Reply:Not much going on here on my store bought trailer's gate, just a weld on the top and bottom.  Has 8k hard miles on it, 2 years old.

Reply:I made my first set of trailer gate hinges a long the line of the pic. that bugwubber posted, they only lasted 6 or 7 years. the set I replaced them with I made out of 3/4" od X6 1/2" long bolts for pins, turning inside of 1"sq tubeing that the bolts run though.I made up 2 pcs of 3/8" X 2" x 6" flat stock with a 3/4" hole drilled 1" in from the side and end, cut the hex head off the bolt placed a jam nut on the other end then placed the bolt though the flat stock with a nut on the out side.locked the nuts down, placed the "pin "though the sq tubing, clamped the flat stock to the side of the tailer then tacked the sq tube to the gate.. checked that the gate opened /closed  ok then welded it all in placeGoing on 5 years and still working great. If I want to remove the gate I back off on the nuts push the pins in and set the gate off. They may look a little rednick to some  but I can repair/replace them if needed, they work great and I made them in my driveway with what I had on hand. Works for me.Go for it  and jest over build on the safe side.Joe
Reply:Do it, you could do half barrel pins to lock the gate upright also. That's a bunch of failure to lose that gate on the road. Go for it!Thermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter
Reply:Originally Posted by dmd3058this was a pic i pulled off of google. my trailer doesn't have a gate, i talk to a local welding shop that said they could build me one if i had blue prints or plans. this is something i didn't feel comfortable with doing my self id rather leave it to professionals for everyone's safety.it will be used to load a quad, and a wright stander (mower)
Reply:Hmmmm.... so some guys go out and buy a new welder and come in here looking for advice to work on a trailer and get instantly slaughtered. This guy comes in saying he isn't comfortable enough with his welding to work on a trailer, but everyone tells him to have at it. Gotta wonder some days...but personally, I'd build it too.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:Whtbaron-I wondered when someone was going to bring that up. I think we do better to encourage people. I would like to see the OP try it. This is a good project to gain skill and build confidence. Dmd3058, if you were close to me and had any question about it after you tried it, I believe I would take the time to help you fix it.
