I figured I'd save some time by using the production potential of the much touted wire processSo I tacked everything up with some 7018AC, I like it because it's easy restrike and just easyThen I wheel out the wire welder(LN-25, NR-211, 17V 150IPM), hook it up to the Ranger, and  BOOOOOOGIE I GRIND OUT THE TACKS SO'S I DON'T HAVE LUMPY FINISH WELDS ON TOP OF THEM, SO DON'T THINK THAT'S THE PROBLEMEvery stinkin NR-211 weld over 7018 tacks turned out like this  The weld puddle literally blew up when going over the ground out 7018 tacks.  You can see the results in the middle of each wire weld where the tack was ground out.  Decent weld up to, and after, the tack.SCREW THIS CRAP SAYS ME.  I GRIND OUT THE CRAPPY LOOKING WIRE WELDS AND GO BACK TO GOOD OL' 7018So...........boys, girls, and transvestite midgets...........ya can run 211 if you tack with 211, but don't tack with 7018, and expect to weld on top of it with the 211.  Now, on the other hand....you can tack with 211, and run 7018 over the top of it.  GO FIGGER"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I love 7018 for welding on stake pockets just like what your doing, I tack with a hot 6010.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:I never was a fan of NR-211. One time I got sent to a Standard oil refinery in California to build 1-mile of pipe tray. Had a hard time convincing the refinery to let us use self shielded flux core wire. Hobart would not give me a letter allowing my guys to weld in so many MPH of wind. Lincoln had no problem writing a letter to the refinery. The guys used NR-212. One day the welding inspector came to me, said the guys in the raising gang were using 6010 to tack everything together. He wanted them to use 7018, which I had them switch to 7018. I don't remember any of the welders complaining about running over 7018 tacks with NR-212.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Flux core is an industrial process that has no business in the hands of a hobby dude(ette) or even small time fabrication. It's nothing more than a farce perpetuated by profiteers selling junk machinery with claims of miracles the little piece of $hit really can't perform." OOO the super Lincoln pro 140(95) can weld 1/4" if you buy this over priced garbage flux core wire. The only thing missing is the ginzu knifeDISCLAIMER: My main machine, used daily, is a 140 Lincoln------on CO2.My barn has a Thunderchicken and a MM200 looking over the cattle (also on CO2). Reply:I have noticed trouble going over 7018 before with innershield. 6011 you can go right over sometimes not even cleaned of slag . Noticed the same thing with 70s6 from time to time .Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:Can't say I've ever run in to this problem myself but then usually when I've run innershield on something the tacks were done with it also.   One thing I have had problems with in the past is trying to go over or fix bad spots in innershield welds using other processes / filler metals (like 7018, dualshield or 70S-6 hard wire).  Seems like once you get innershield wire on something you either need to stick with it or make sure you've got it all ground out before trying some thing else.
Reply:Can't speak of issues of flux core over 7018. But I have had issues with hard wire over 7018, bubbles and such. Switched to 6010/6011 and my issues went away. I happen to like flux cored wire. It is nice to use outside on buckets, boxes or crushers. Not saying I don't like stick, but I just would rather get the job done then move onto something else. $$$$$ is addicting I guess.TOOLS AND TOYSSMAW Mid States Inc. Reply:I'm a fan of flux core wire. It ain't magic, but used properly it makes a good strong weld in conditions that are less than favorable, all while keeping production up. There are in fact many applications where it is the only process I can think of that works, although maybe that is because it works so well I've not looked into anything else.As to flux core on 110 machines, yep, it is a big help there too, but won't replace someone with a clue how to weld.Mr. HE
