Hello, are 220v welding machines strictly 3-phase or can they be operated on 1-phase 220v supply?
Reply:220 is an old voltage standard in North America, 240 has been the standard for quite some time, with that said my newish Miller welders are plated to operate at 230/460 volts. The voltage alone is not what makes a welder singe phase or three phase, some welders work on either 1 or 3 phase power, you have to look at the specific machines power requirements. There are many three phase "only" machines that CAN be used on single phase, the do use a lot more current on single phase. Reply:Lower voltage 3 phase power in my area comes in 208, 460 and 575v options that I have seen. My Lincoln ideal arc 250 will run on 230v/460v/575v but single phase only. It can be wired internally to run on one phase (I think it's actually 2) of a 460v or 575v 3 phase power supply. But it's still running on single phase power.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Some multi family residential installations use wye connected three phase. Typically these offer three phase 208 Volts or single phase at 120 or 208. More common is single phase 240/120 as Mike says.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
