Does the crater means that there is no gas or is the metal just dirty?
Reply:Could be either or both or something else. Give some more information. It looks like it could be MIG but not sure?
Reply:I am TIG welding
Reply:Could be oil on there but most likely lack of argon coverage. Is the cup butted against the torch? What cup and what cfh?
Reply:You should always clean your metal with acetone.

Reply:Could be contamination but looks like poor gas coverage to me. Are you welding outdoors or in a drafty area?A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:[QUOTE=Mr. Gerardo;6024701]Does the crater means that there is no gas or is the metal just dirty?[QUOTE]In this weld joint, this is gross porosity, caused by as others noted-dirty metal and tramp oil. The cratering is the blowout hole from the porosity bubbling below it. A tiny bit of oil/water when heated and vaporized can expand to 1000 times or more it's original volume. That's what makes big time porosity bubbles.Making it a habit to prep and clean the metal-prior to welding seems to be a very difficult practice for new folks to embrace.PREP BOTH SIDES and the edge.Last edited by dave powelson; 06-27-2015 at 11:19 AM.Blackbird |
