I have read a bunch of reviews and looked around a lot and I have narrowed my choices down to 3 welders (I think)1. ESAB Miniarc 161lts w/tig kit. ~$6502. Thermal Arc 161s w/ tig ~$750As far as I can tell these are about the same. The TA comes with a nice electrode holder and ground clamp but I am not sure it is $100 dollars nicer. Is there anything I am missing between these two? 3. Everlast PowerARC 160 STH ~$490Pros: HF start, gas solenoid, pedal capable, $150 cheaper than the ESAB. 5 year "warranty" Cons: Let's be real, ever last gets a bad rep around here, and it sees to be for good reason. But it I can't help but think about this one because of the  much lower price and the extra features. Jody seems to do ok with his Everlasts.Help me decide.
Reply:1 or 2. I don't know anything about the machines but I would trust buying either brand.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Only going off of my own personal experience with EVERLAST, but i have the 200dx and the supercut 50. They both work great no issues and excellent costumer support.. Ive been told that performance such as arc quality and output is not that far off from the other american machines.Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Reply:That's pretty good. I was under the impression that all of them were Chinese units. I can't find anything on the ESAB site.
Reply:That esab is ChineseWTF............. Is that a horn?Last edited by DXN1EL; 02-13-2014 at 02:18 PM.Everlast PowerARC 300
Reply:From what I've been reading the Everlast machines are fine or even pretty nice in terms of arc quality as long as you don't need much customer support. Trying to decide if the extra features and lower price are worth the risk.
Reply:I'm pretty sure the ESAB is Chinese.  The TA definitely is - look up Shanghai WTL Welding.  As is at least one of the (pricier) Longevity models. In Europe, I think one of the economy models they sell is also made by Shanghai WTL.  Looks identical. Respectable stuff if the re-marketer pays attention to quality specs.  Of the hundreds of Chinese companies making welders, there are a handful that can and do make good stuff."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Oldendum, I see in your signature you have the ESAB. Could you share your thoughts on it?
Reply:The ESAB miniarc can be found cheaper than 650, I have seen it for 550. And I would go with the ESAB, I really want one as well but I have a portable already.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold

Reply:If I had to, I'd borrow some money and go with the Swedish unit.
Reply:I actually called Everlast and talked someone. Seemed alright enough and they are willing to do a pretty sweet deal on the 160 w/ a pedal. I really am learning that direction after reading and watching the reviews.
Reply:Hey, npg170.I don't know about the Everlast 160 w/ a pedal but I purchased an Everlast 200DX Dual Voltage from them last October. Has worked very well and I think I paid $1199.00 promotional price when the dual voltage unit came out. Also, they answered any questions I had after the unit arrived so I have been very pleased with this purchase so far.Good luck with your decision.Lincoln Mig_Pak 15ThermalArc 181i                               Lincoln Pro-CutEverlast 200DX Dual VoltageVictor Oxy/AceJackson Pro VariableJackson HSL10 Passive w/Phillips Gold #10Tweco WeldSkil
Reply:I went with the 160STH w/ a pedal ordered direct from Everlast. I am pretty excited. As far as I can tell the kit comes with 3/32 consumables but no electrodes. Any recommendations on tungsten?
Reply:Thoriated, lanthanated, or tri mix tungsten. 3/32" should handle anything the machine can put out. If you need to weld something thin you can grind it down to a long sharp point, or get some smaller tungsten. Can't say I agree with the machine you bought, but I hope it works like it should for you.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:Hey, npg170.Congratulations on your decision. I don't think you can go wrong at that price for what that machine does. Reply:I also purchased an Everlast 200DX Dual Voltage in December last year. Last weekend we used it on a job where we only had 120volts and it worked great. We have been using thoriated tungsten without problems.Any day I get to weld is a good day!
Reply:I have been using Radnor E3 Tungsten in 1/16 in. and 3/32 in. diameters with good results in my Everlast 200DX Dual Voltage TIG Welder.Lincoln Mig_Pak 15ThermalArc 181i                               Lincoln Pro-CutEverlast 200DX Dual VoltageVictor Oxy/AceJackson Pro VariableJackson HSL10 Passive w/Phillips Gold #10Tweco WeldSkilGot everything in and traded my 40cf cylinder in for an 80cf of argon this morning. Came home for lunch excited to fire it up and realized that I for got to get any filler rods while I was at the welding shop. I did melt some edges and push a puddle around. I also burned a few rods of 7014 and 6013 and the arc seems really smooth compared to the old AC Century I have been playing with. Excited to get some filler and practice actually weld something. Probably a welding cart because the HF mig cart I have isn't going to cut it.
Reply:I hate the radnor E3...unless your running it on an inverter which you would be...I used it on my TA 181i it was ok then but id rather use my old idealarc lincoln and scratch start with some red band Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:I actually went with 2% lanthinated for no particular reason. Seems to work ok, or it would if I could stop dipping it in the puddle.

Reply:I had the 160sth, for about a year, sold it to a friend, But of all the tungsten I ran on it 2% thoriated performed the best.Inverters and transformers, can't beat 2% thoriated on DC.2cents,~John
