My back is old and doesn't like working close to the shop floor anymore. I've been thinking about building a lift that would accomodate bikes and lawn tractors. Anybody got plans or drawings that you care to share? Sure would appreciate someone saving me some design time and trouble.HF Dual Mig 151 with Bluewelders and Galaxieman's modsHF Digital Plasma TorchHF Blue Flames Hood70's era Craftsman 230 stick welderVictor 100 OA
Reply:Try the search feature here on the forum as it has a number of threads dealing with motorcycle lifts. Here is one link to a site selling plans for a lift, if you really need the plans to build a similar lift. Reply:I built one a while ago, not a scissor but it works for me. If you want to build one like this let me know, I'll take better pictures and measurements for you. The cylinder is a air jack cylinder from Northern tools The rest is 2X2X1/8 box tube. 2X2 angle and some 3/16 flat plate. I had everything but the cylinder laying around and wanted to build one for years, so I finally gave in and did it. It's 2' wide with 1' extensions that bolt on for lifting garden tractors. It's a 8' long platform with a 2 foot ramp, so 10 foot when it's down. Attached ImagesLast edited by Ford.crazy; 03-22-2012 at 10:07 PM.
Reply:Thanks Ford.crazy, that looks like just what I had in mind. Any info you've got will be appreciated.HF Dual Mig 151 with Bluewelders and Galaxieman's modsHF Digital Plasma TorchHF Blue Flames Hood70's era Craftsman 230 stick welderVictor 100 OA
Reply:I would like that info too! awesome lift!A man needs to know his limitations!
Reply:This is the air jack I used http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...9249_200349249. You can make this any size you want as far as high and length. I used 36 inch legs, so the table at full lift is about 40 inches, give or take an inch. I cheated and put the mounts on the cylinder and then tacked to the cross brace then the cross brace to the legs. All the brackets that hold the legs on are 4X4X3/16 sheet metal. You will need to round the ends of the legs off so they don't bind when lifting. All the bolts are ½ X3 1/2 inch grade 8's with lock nuts. If you have some extra cash you could use zerk fitting(I think thats what they are called, there just fitting you can grease). The cylinder mounts are the same 4x4x3/16 metal, just ground to look better. For the top it's 8 foot long 2 foot wide. All the cross brasses are 18 inches apart on center. Same for the side but they are only 1 foot wide. Only thing I would change is the safety lock, I have it on the end. If I had it to do over, I would put it next to the cylinder. I used plywood for the top, so when it gets to oily and grimy, I can just spin the self tappers out and replace it. I'll get more picture this weekend and take some better measurements. When I built the table I was just winging it and built it as I went, with what I had laying around at the time.
Reply:Thanks Ford.crazy. I might have to tweak it a bit to accomodate my HF air jack. I think it's a little taller than your NT model. Why put the safety lock next to the cylinder? Stability? or does it get in the way where it is now?Edited after checking my jack. It's actually a tad shorter @ 23 3/4"Last edited by Dave1941; 03-24-2012 at 12:15 PM.HF Dual Mig 151 with Bluewelders and Galaxieman's modsHF Digital Plasma TorchHF Blue Flames Hood70's era Craftsman 230 stick welderVictor 100 OA

Reply:Here's some pictures of my mid rise car lift, I made a motorcylce lift some time ago, first effort and it works OK but it is a little bigger and heavier than I would like, thought some day I will steal the design of the car lift and just cut it down in scale. I was thinking a single channel up the middle on the floor, and then 4 brances, 2 from each side to anchor and support the swinging uprights. Heres some pictures. If you were to copy this and really narrow it it would be light, most of this is 4x2 1/4 tubing but is rated for 6,000 Lbs.for a bike or lawn equipment channel would be fine. Reply:Built my lift about 12 years ago. It's a two stage hydraulic cylinder that is buried in the floor inside a 14x14" square tube. It will raise the bike about 30" off the floor. This project is not for the faint of heart, I have three times what a Handy Lift costs into this baby. However I can claim that you don't see too many of these in shops.
Reply:Looking at old posts and found this project. I really like the design, but how do you keep water out of the square tube?HF Dual Mig 151 with Bluewelders and Galaxieman's modsHF Digital Plasma TorchHF Blue Flames Hood70's era Craftsman 230 stick welderVictor 100 OA

Reply:@ Ford.crazy Awesome table do you have more in depth plans that your willing to share ie. measurements and maybe closer pictures of the pivot joints. I am very interested in making one in a week or two. I cant come to grips on paying close to a grand on a table when a person should be able to make one in half that. any information that could help me would be awesome. Thanks

Reply:Yeah I know I figured I would give it a shot. I think I can figure most of it out by the pictures he has and the info hes given allready. it would have been nice to know a few more specs though.
Reply:Egghed80,Check these out. I have had one for several years and it works well. The cheapest one they have is $600.I think you will find that if you build one you can easily have over $500 in it without powder coating.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I have searched and search for one that will meet my needs and the picture in my brain lol. I have found one but its like 914.00 and thats having it ship to my work they wanted another hundred to take it to my house. I am going to build one using the above pictures from ford.crazy to cheat off of. The 8 ton cylinder is 100.00 through northern tool and the metal that I am getting is from a recycling yard that sells the metal for .54 a pound. Really good steel just surface rust on most so i will have to sand it clean again. I am going to use some rustolem primer and industrial black frame paint. If I am corrrect i should be able to make it for no more than 400 and i get to play in my garage and drink some beer.

Reply:A buddy has one of those HF foot pump lifts in his shop because someone gave it to him. He'll use it for a long term build but they are a pain to use. Also, don't put a full dresser on one! GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I bought a used HF lift that the op added some side extensions to. I put my John Deere 720 LGT on it and nly raised it about 2 feet before deciding that the lift was too loosey goosey to be safe. It's been stored ever since.HF Dual Mig 151 with Bluewelders and Galaxieman's modsHF Digital Plasma TorchHF Blue Flames Hood70's era Craftsman 230 stick welderVictor 100 OA |
