Hi newbie here with request for help.  I live on the Big Island of Hawaii, and broke my (new to me) Lincoln stick welder.  I think this welder is 55 years old if I read the serial # correctly.  I checked the Lincoln site and am still confused (Their parts # reference chart did me in, I gave up), I am currently staring at their diagram of the Brushholder assembly and it looks like Greek to me.  Servicing it is almost out of the question, the nearest service shop is on another island= pricey$$$$. Attached a picture of the part in question.  It resides on the shaft between engine and generator and looks like a ring (one of two) that might or might not have magnetic qualities.  Tempted to have a buddy weld it back together, but before I do something I really regret, would like some input.  If anyone knows the part name, number, or a supplier that I could order from, I would be most appreciative.  Also attaching a pic of the welder for the Lincoln fanatics.  Aloha from Hawaii.  Pics do not resize well, might try again. Reply:Those are slip rings that excite the alternator.  I thing you need a new rotor.  Many $s.  Good luck.  I don't think its as old as you do.  I have a 2 cyl air cooled one for sale.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:liko,  those rings are most likely brass or copper, you should be able to fuse it back together. If you do I would make sure that it is nice and even, also make sure it is flat and smooth. Check the brushes, I would imagine that both will need to be replaced.
Reply:did the rings break because of something I did? or just old age and use?  I'd hate to fix it and repeat the same mistake.
Reply:Looks like corrosion. From looking at the wires that connect to the brushes.  Those rings should have a smooth slightly dull finish. Are the brushes worn out?  I am sure they are pitted.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:A phone call to Lincoln or a shop that specalises in welder repairs, may go along way towards helping solve your  problem
Reply:Send the serial number and we will try to help. Your machine has a 16hp Briggs and Stratton and is the first dc welder, air cooled, that Lincoln built in the 'modern' era, since the 50 hz machine in the 50's and 60's that used Onan CCK engine. At that time, air cooled engines were in general limited to 3000 rpm which results in 50hz leading to many burned motors. Lincoln jumped on the 3600 bandwagon in 1978, I think, which gave the machine the ability to deliver 7000 watts - the design that dominates all air cooled welders today. Replacing those cast iron rods with aluminum allows that 3600 rpm operation.     I have never seen a slip ring break. Since your location and circumstances are as you state, you have nothing to loose by trying to repair the rotor. A used rotor can be had on used market for about 250.00. We have a shipment going to Oahu this week if that might be of interest to you. weldersales
Reply:I've seen that happen before.  Lincoln sometimes has slip ring assemblies available, and they are not always listed in the published parts lists.  I would suggest emailing or calling Lincoln about this.  Make sure you include the code number for your machine. If the part is available, and can be replaced on your machine, it would probably need to be pressed in place, connected to the winding, turned, and finished.  A good electric motor repair shop may be able to do this kind of job.Full service electric motor shops also have access to a huge selection of aftermarket components for motors and generators. Even if Lincoln doesn't have the part, It might be a good idea to check with one in your area to see if they can repair or replace the slip rings.
Reply:Before you repair the slip rings, I would check them with an ohm meter to make sure the rotor is not open.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:thank you for all of your help, I work monday (24 hr shift) so Tuesday I will contact Lincoln and some of the shops locally here in Hilo and keep you guys updated, thanks again for the suggestions.

Reply:The 'reply' function of the private message system, for some reason, is not working, Liko. The 'incoming' is, though. If you like, send me your email address by PM and we will work on getting your information. weldersales
