Hi all, I'm just curios to no what filler rods I'd need to weld Stainless steel? Also I'm new to the tig welding scene and willing to give it ago and learn.. Is it a filler rod that is inserted into the gun it's self?Cheers
Reply:You need a tungsten electrode in the torch. While you could put the filler wire in the torch, your results may be less than desirable. The filler wire that you hold in your hand, adding it to the puddle created by the tungsten electrode in the torch, will vary depending on what parent material you are welding.
Reply:and they come in all different thickness's? The bigger the thickness the more heat? Just a guess haha..
Reply:maybe an introduction course at your local school wouldn't be a bad idea, or some 1 on 1 time with an old-timer that is willing to show you the ropes. If you're really going to start from absolutely zero, chances are too big that you're going to pick up bad habits, that are hard to get rid of, afterwards... (and your learning curve will be very steep)
Reply:Hmm, I no how to weld in a sense Im always on the mig but went out and brought a TIG for the purpose of welding more materials.. I've already had a play and it is harder than I had expected it to be but never the less that isn't gunna stop me from playing more and more.. I've just ran out of materials from what the previous owner had gave me.. Just wanted to get some more filler rods and electorodes on order.. Just need that little bit more information about the sizes ect.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Get some 1/16 and 3/32 red thoriated tungsten for DC. Or if you machine has AC get gold 1.5 lanthanated in 1/16 3/32 and 1/8 if you got a machine that goes over 200 amps get the 1/8 tungsten. For mild steel get 70s2 filler rod in 1/16 or if you are welding 16 gauge get .045 thickness rod. What kind of stainless are you welding?theres somthing called back purge when welding stainless that has to be used often when butt welding thin stainless and other situations. You better get your questions in now sense you seem pretty far off. Also what welder do you have?try using a 7 cup at 14-16 cfh with 1/4 inch stick out or less. Very important to keep the tungsten as close to the metal or puddle as possible with out bumping 24/7/365. Try to keep it closer then 1/8 if your on 1/8 thickness metal.
Reply:I'm not 100% on the nameOf the welder its DC 240amps and what do you mean I seem pretty far off?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I would suggest you start with Miller's web site.  www.millerwelds.com and look at the resources there. There are resources that discuss tungsten sizes vs. the amps set on the machine.Read up first. Get an owners manual for your machine.  That will also help to get initial settings - and tell you what adjustments you can actually make. The torch (you call it a "gun") holds the tungsten electrode and delivers the shielding gas.  There are different types of torches available and they can be had in different sizes (Current capacity).  For the torch, you can get different accessories - including collets that hold different size tungsten.   There are different tungsten types available.  Pure, thoriated, ceriated, lanthanated etc.  Each with potentially different plusses and minuses - depending on the machine and depending on what you want to weld.  You can get different nozzles to control the gas flow (bigger typically can flow more, but get in the way - again depends what you want to do). Most dedicated TIG machines have gas solenoids as well.  Often you can set timers to control how long the gas flows before the arc starts and after the arc stops.Instead of a wire feeder like you are used to, filler for TIG is added by hand (typically).  For stainless, you use the same fillers as you would for MIG, just not a roll, instead individual cut pieces.  The type of stainless filler depends on the type of stainless you are welding. When doing TIG on stainless, often it is necessary to provide a shielding gas for the back side of the weld.  This requires a separate source of argon - either another tank + regulator or a dual regulator.Bottom line, there are lots of variables, lots to learn and I can 100% guarantee that welding on stainless is not the way to learn TIG.  And no, MIG welding doesn't really prepare you for it.If you really wanted to learn quickly, the fastest way is to have an expert teach you.  That means either someone you know, or a course.  Personally I recommend a course.  Formal safety training and formal step by step path to learning.   So, go buy yourself a set of TIG welding gloves (yes, they are different) and contact your local schools and find a real welding course.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
Reply:Hi, Thanks for the reply.. It's very hard to find a place that actually offers a course for me to actually go on.. and when Finding one it will cost an arm and a leg.. I have the time and patience for it and I'm willing to learn I mean if it actually comes to it and they're course available Ill take that opportunity but for now I'm willing to self learn.. as for the Stainless steel Manifold that I wan't to be making. I'm not in a massive rush as it's a project for a current car I'm working on and requires a custom manifold for the TD04 to be bolted on.. And I've already seen many video's of people creating Mani's and it doesn't look easy to be honest..As for the gas.. I'm using PUB Gas which is just pure C02 for the pure fact It only cost £20 to refill as if I was to get it mixed I'd be looking at £140 +VAT I mean I spoke to a fabricator and he Insisted that I went out and brought PUB gas as it's only there for the shielding process, Do correct me If he is wrong in telling me that but I was looking for a cheap alternative. I've used the pub gas with the MIG and it's been fine?Cheers
Reply:100% argon for tig shielding gas.Your 100% co2 is only going to work for mig.Try welding-tv.com and watch all the tig videos - you are starting off without any background knowledge.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
