I'm needing to build a transmission adapter plate for my recent project. There will be a plate that bolts up to the engine bell housing and then then transmission bell housing will bolt to the plate. Like so:Then I will need to make a spacer that the flexplate attaches to like so:My question is what would be the all around best metal to build these two pieces out of?

Reply:You will want to use 6061T-651 Aluminum.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Originally Posted by zapsterYou can use any method of manufacture you wish..Plate steel will work just fine...Aluminum is much lighter and just as effective..Either way you will need 3/8" plate so all the countersunk (Flathead) screws will be flat with the plate and any studs needed will have enough threads...All the Ford/Mopar engines adapted to Powerglides for drag racing purposes from all the major manufactures were of that material..I have made quite a few myself.....zap!
Reply:I know I am digging up an old thread but I am about to do the same thing and make an adapter for my OM617 powered Jeep Wrangler to marry up the AX15 and the new diesel. I was looking through the characteristics of the different aluminum alloys and it seems that 2024 alclad would be the ideal alloy to use being that I will not be welding anything, only using fasteners. It also has higher fatigue strength and tensile strength versus 6061.Zap can you comment on this at all? I work in the aerospace industry and there are a lot of 2024 alloy parts used for our structures (center wing box on a C-130 for one example).AHP 200xMiller Trailblazer 251 NTMiller Legend AEAD-200-LEEastwood MIG-175Eastwood 40A Plasma CutterDillon Mk 5 OA setup

Reply:I would use 7075-T6 I machine a lot of hot rod parts and it works well for me. B.J.
Reply:bj- Yeah I was looking at 7075 as well but the jump in price for not a lot of increase in tensile strength, hardness and fatigue strength... I cant really justify the cost.zap- Thanks for the advice on the dowel pins. I had honestly not thought about them.AHP 200xMiller Trailblazer 251 NTMiller Legend AEAD-200-LEEastwood MIG-175Eastwood 40A Plasma CutterDillon Mk 5 OA setup |
