Hey all,I have this electric motor with a 10mm shaft. It's the type that looks like a D and uses a set screw.I'm trying to fit a 3 pulley vbelt setup on it, but I can't seem to find any place that sells any pulleys with a 10mm inner diameter.Can I just use a bushing and drill a hole in it so the set screw can pass through the bushing?How would you all tackle this problem without any precision machining tools? I pretty much have access to hand tools and a drill press.Thanks,Luke
Reply:10mm is just a bit bigger than 3/8". If you can find a 3/8 pulley, you might be able to enlarge the hole with a 10mm bit.If your pulley is for a larger shaft (1/2") then a bushing may the the least expensive way to fit the pulley to the shaft.John
Reply:I have some 1/2 and 5/8 pullies kicking around. I like the idea of taking a 3/8 ID bushing and drilling it out.But I'm worried about it being out of balance if its not done on a lathe. Should I just not worry about it?Last edited by Taiden; 02-18-2011 at 08:45 PM.
Reply:How fast will the pulley be turning?Less than 1000 RPM, you may not notice a slight off-center.10,000 RPM, it'll shake your teeth out.Either very accurate drill press work or give the guy with the lathe a 6 pack.AFTER he does the work ;-)John
Reply:If it uses a set screw then It is not that balanced. The drill should center itself in the existing hole when it is drilled larger. Drilling and tapping should not cause a problem since it is meant to have one. If you were adding significant weight to the outside rim then I might worry, otherwise no big deal.

I ended up buying a 5/8OD 1/2ID bushing and 1/2 OD 3/8 ID bushing at the hardware store.... press fit the two... drilled out the 3/8... massaged it on with a file checking for ovaling with a micrometer... snug fit... works like a charm!Converted my 1/3 hp craftsman 2x42 belt sander (4400fpm) into a 3/4hp with four speeds... 1400, 2400, 4000, 6600 fpm. (for small knife making) |
