I recently visited a local community college welding shop. I noticed that the welding booths were equipped with Lincoln mig welders but each had a third lead running from machine that had a stinger. I had to ask and was told it could be set to stick weld......My question is, can I do this with my MM 252?Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180

Reply:You can not stick weld with th MM252. It is a CV only machine. I don't know what machine the Lincolns were, but the tech school near me runs XMT 304's setup to run mig, stick and DC tig. The XMT is a CC/CV power source. You have to add the wire feeder, stick leads or tig torch in order to weld with it. As mentioned it is possible to run a VS wire feeder on a CC only machine, but it will not run anywhere near as well as if it's run on a CV power source. On CC you can't run short circuit mig well at all, and if you run FC wire in spray out of position welds are a PITA..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Lincoln PM 350 will do mig, tig and stick but as always a multi function machine will have compromises.

Reply:Its probably a lincoln power wave.  Its a wirefeeder/multi processor machine.  First time I saw one I was like WTF?  Neat idea, but I would prefer my miller XMT350mpa with a wire feeder seperate. http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...roduct=K2774-4Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:The Lincoln machines I'm referring to were not configured as an "external" power source. They had on board feeder systems. I know I can add a wire feeder, tig, Hf box, etc.. to a power source, my trailblazer for example or a Miller syncro wave, but have never seen a stick or tig added to a dedicated mig machine. It just struck me as odd. My original question when starting this thread was leading to a possible tig set up using my MM 252 as power source and my HF box but realized The MM was DC only, no AC, no aluminum tig. Kinda answered my own question. My apologizes to every one if this question was a "DUMB" one. Sundown111 thought so.. enough to PM me and tell me how "boarder line" stupid it was, considering I clam to be a "professional welder" and I should invest in a miller student pack due to my apparent lack of welding knowledge. Sundown111,, I know there are far better welders than myself and I will never clam to be a technology guru. BUT.. I'll be happy to lay my welds, any process, any base metal, any alloy, beside yours or any one else.Last edited by wagin; 02-18-2011 at 12:07 AM.Reason: spellingMiller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:Wagin,You're precisely right.  I did try to enlighten you via PM rather than bringing it up on an open forum.  Call it "professional courtesy" or call it whatever you wish.Whether you accept it or not, the "professionals" here have a responsibility to put out accurate/reliable information.  The new guys don't have the benefit of years of experience and generally take what the "pros" say at face value.Had you been smart, you'd have "let it go" and some (even the pros) would have probably just accepted that someone was "having a bad day" or had a "brain fart".  No, you choose to mock me on an open forum.Any "professional" in the welding trade should have a basic understanding (at least) of the different processes involving CC (constant current) and CV (constant voltage) machines.  They perform differently and are generally not interchangeable.Even your last post further highlighted your lack of understanding when you commented that "you know you can hook a wirefeeder up to your Syncrowave power supply".  Mig welding is a CV process.  The Syncrowave is a CC machine.  Yea, you can hook a voltage sensing wirefeeder to a Syncrowave, but you're generally limited to a globular or spray output and it's basically a bad idea.  Hooking your HF box to a MM252 to tig weld aluminum is also not going to happen.  One, because, as you mentioned, the MM252 is a DC only machine.  The larger reason however is because it is a CV machine and is not designed for tig welding.Your Trailblazer (along with Miller's XMT series) is a multiprocess machine.  That means that you have the option of using either CV output or CC output.  It will do tig (DC only) when used in the CC mode but will not do AC tig (lacks AC output) which is generally what's used for tig welding aluminum. When a "claimed professional" demonstrates such a lack of understanding of the basic welding processes (and their differences), it also makes one question what else they're lacking in their overall fabrication background. In my PM I mentioned a couple of references which would provide enlightenment.  You now want to call me out because I would even recommend them.  That's fine.  Do what you wish.  To me, a guy who does not wish to further his knowledge in his chosen field, will never be a PROFESSIONAL.  He'll always be a hack who's "getting by".Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:A couple work places had ESAB 260 amp machines that were stick, DC TIG and MIG capable, they were set up and looked just like any 250 amp MIG machine. Maybe Lincoln has something similar.Leo

Reply:Uhh...How did I mock you? That was not my intent. Based on the reply posts to my question, it was legitimate. I saw what appeared to be dedicated mig machines with a stinger lead sticking out so I presented questions to this forum. I consider that research. And yes, a feeder can hook to a syncro wave; and yes, I have used my Trailblazer with HF box to tig aluminum for years. My welding, fabrication, maintenance and engineering skills have provided me and mine a very nice life style for 20+ years. I appreciate you, and everyone sharing your knowledge. I don't appreciate your condescending approach. You assume too much based on one post. Any "hack, getting by" can read and quote machine manuals, true professionals make them perform.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180

Reply:We have and like the PowerMig 350 with the push-pull gun for aluminum. The C300 (as opposed to the older PowerMig 300) is also current, but we don't have one of those to compare to.
