I have inherited an oxygen cylinder from my father in law.   I have used up the oxygen and would love to refill or exchange it but the local dealer says "no".  He says it is just scrap metal.   At the local scrap metal buyer oxygen cylinders are posted as one of the things they don't buy.   Any ideas on how I can dispose of this?I am thinking cutting it up into about four pieces and selling it with my next load of scrap anyway.   Question....If the bottle is empty and the valve removed is it safe to cut with a torch?
Reply:Give it to someone on here who is close by you, try a different gas supplier, or put it on CL for the wind chime people....they love them.
Reply:I would love to get one for scrap price for a wind chime. Where are you at?
Reply:My advice is to hang on to it for a future project.   There's some cool things to be made from them.    Chimes and bells mostly but they also make good targets out at distance.   The one pictured below also serves as a folf target on a private course. An O2 cylinder, pick head, heavy steel ring and some stainless stick rod for putting the logo on, and, well,
Reply:This is a scuba tank, shorter than many oxygen cylinders, same concept. Attached Images"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Not trying to hijack your thread and change the subject too much but just had to share. I went to an auction last summer at an old machine shop. Incredible stuff. Piles and piles of steel on racks, on the ground everywhere. A lot of the steel had lichen growing on it, and that's in Idaho, so that gives an idea of how long it had been sitting for. Lots of neat old huge lathe, drill presses, you name it, forge, etc etc. Everything an old machine shop would have. I was about an hour late getting to the auction. Just as I walked up to the lot they were bidding on it was a group of 20 or 30 cylinders oxygen and acetylene and they were the big ones. Literally right when I walked up to the group of people they sold that whole lot of cylinders for $75 to some guy. yes that is $75. I was sick. I still am sick thinking about it and if I had been 1 minute earlier... he must have been one of the happiest people on earth right about then.
Reply:I want it! Where is it?An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:I cut a old one up and used it for a launch tube for July 4'th mortar amusement...Long time ago....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You could always find a local testing facility and try to get it recertified.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:If you just cut both ends off, it suddenly becomes just a piece of pipe. What can you make from a piece of pipe, that diameter? No need to scrap it, make something from it.

Reply:Try a different refill place, like a large company. I have taken cylinder with old dates on them and they have exchanged them for new tanks no questions. The place said 99% of the tanks pass even if they are old and rust, they send them out to be refurbished, tested and filled.
