I wasn't sure if there was any real technique for making long welds without stopping and having to constantly tie in to the previous weld.I had to make this weld shown below which is about 6' long and the only way I could think to pull it off was to backstep the entire way about 3-4" at a time. The welds are all in the flat position.I'm using a Miller 211 MVP on 3/16" steel on auto-feed.

Reply:Any critique for the weld I posted is also appreciated. Also I'm aware I should have cleaned the weld site, but it's not a project that really mattered.

Reply:Yeah, i don't think there really is a standard technique that everyone knows.  Its just whatever works for you.  I find that i either shuffle my feet side to side or heel to toe.  Just depends on random factors, i.e.; work piece height, the amount of room you have to move around the seam, dexterity, etc...That's my opinion though.Btw, the weld looks nice from from the small picture it shows on my phone.seabee78

Reply:i think the most important thing is to be comfortable and run the weld dry first (dont hit the trigger) and be comfortable at the end of your run. keep your feet in a good comfy stance. those are my most important things Miller Dynasty 350 water cooledweldcraft wp-17www.instagram.com/jmoskeewww.etsy.com/shop/jmoskeeart
Reply:With your machine that's the best method. As mentioned, you risk over heating the machine as well as not warping the crap out of what ever yer working on Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Dry run is the best I've found and don't lock yourself into a position by putting your weight on a elbow or leaning onto the work PC  use it for balance and to steady your hands the longest I've done is a 27ft weld on a boat hull doing a shuffle.
Reply:Depending on the weld and the process, you could setup your gun on a torch turtle if you had one. would take the strain of your arms and hands..TOOLS AND TOYSSMAW Mid States Inc. Reply:I have long bar clamps and pony pipe clamps I sometimes use to "ride" but with practice you will be able to freehand it.  You know you are a welder when one gets through the jacket and you shake it out without stopping.
Reply:This is a 10 foot long weld btw.

Reply:This LN-25 has trigger hold though I never use it, I did wear one trigger out with the death grip but I have since learned to relax lol.

Reply:Hello, I weld usually flat flux cored but I'm welding bout 10' 12' sized beads without stopping (mandatory) I would brush up or practice welding with one hand. what I personally do is I stand at the end of were the bead is going to end that way I can fill in the undercut. is it flat groves? or t-joints? Like I said practice one handed until you able to do it with confidence. I used to weld on oil skids for the gulf of mexico and so when we flipped the skid side ways and had is sitting on its side, on its sde it was about 40ft tall, so when we get on a ladder there was no way to get comfortable and weld inside these little boxes 20-40ft in the air. so I put a magnet on my LED flas light and put it about 6-7 inches so the light is able to expand over the whole area, so reaching in with one hand and welding was a MUST. I used to do back and forth motion it was easier instead of doing the "o'' motion while still able not to get undercut..so good luck practice practice and keep the area your welding on CLEAANNNN. Porosity is a pain to grind out and do again after taking your time.
