HI guys, I'm at TAFE (technical school) still studying welding, and getting lots of experience, but I'm still a bit of a hack. I'm building a gate on the weekend with some square box steel. 1.6mm thick. Can anyone give me tips on welding this up. its just a square. I read that you should not gap it, and maybe bevell the edges. I want to keep it fairly square! Its being Mig'd. I have a tig but will most likely not use it for this job. Any tips and tricks would be greatCheers
Reply:Yes 45 the cuts, Bevel them, square with a tight fit, tack, mig uphill the four outside corners first, then the flats both side, let it cool and do the downhill insides of the gate. It will pull, you just have to do your best to control how u want it too. What are you putting inside the gate frame for materials?
Reply:So I should mitre the joins? Not just butt them up square? There will be timber slats accross the face of the gate to close it all up.
Reply:Butted square joints you have open ends to deal with. Then you have to cap them typically. With square tube on a gate, I'd tend to lean towards miters so you don't have places for wasps and such to try and take up residence. Miters can tend to be easier to do than butted joints and caps. If nothing else, less welding. Holes for attaching slats, + tubes are also an invitation to water. Water in enclosed tubes leads to rot or freeze issues. With miters, water can hopefully drain down to the lower section where a few drain holes can let water out from the whole assembly..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:oohSam, I like the closed in corner look with miter cut joints. Joint preparation is the 1st step to a good looking project! You want your corners as tight as you can get it. 1.6mm thick? Your instructor should teach you the proper terms for metal thickness. 10 gauge is close to 1/8" thick. Tack the four outside corners 1st, ensuring that you have good penetration on both pieces you are tacking. You will rely on these tacks holding the metal together as you square it up. Do not weld the corner from top to bottom because that much weld will not allow you to be able to square up the tubing. A couple of things to know about mig welding thin wall steel. If your heat is set correctly you can weld downhill on 1/4" thick steel. Uphill welding produces to much heat and that causes more distortion or warping of your metal. Have fun with your project.bcwldr80MILLER BIG BLUE 300MILLER 175Miller suitcase 12 vs
Reply:Thanks guys I'll give it it a go.  Will put up some pics.  In Australia we don't use inches,  we use mm for everything.... Unless you're and old man..(that'll get a few blokes riled up)!!    So with mitre joints you still bevel the edges right. ?  I'm learning heaps at school but still have a lot to go.  Trying to take on my own projects at home and be pro active so.  I'm halfway through a welding trolley table at the moment which I made from a salvaged industrial fence.  All round tube which I found out is very hard to weld.
Reply:You might take a minute and add your location to your profile so everyone know where you are from. I had a feeling with metric measurements you were from some place other than the US, but I'd have guessed Canada. Most of us are in the US and knowing you are from elsewhere can help when answering some questions. Plenty of guys here from Oz as well if you need to locate something in your neck of the woods down under.Yes you can still bevel the edges. With  the outside corner when you cut the miter you end up with a knife edge that is hard to weld because of how thin it is. You can just take the grinder and knock off the edge so that you have a flat on the end. The two flats give you your bevel when put together on the corner..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
