This is my weld vs my instructor's. 2G, 1/16th to 3/8th. What do you guys think? Attached Images
Reply:Yours Is on the right?
Reply:That's supposed to say "dog eat dog."And no, mine is the left.
Reply:I started to say he should be afraid for his job, but his job is teaching. He taught you well. We'll let him keep his job.
Reply:You know the old saying: Those that can/do, those that can not................................zzzzzzzzBubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:Thank you. I'm not a fan of his teaching style. He's a "you asked me a question so let me SHOW you and then it turns out looking worse and/or didn't answer my question. I prefer to do what I'm told, then be given something to alter and try again. I usually do my own thing meeting his requirements.  I completed all of the semester's task 3 weeks early so today he and I had a little competition. Different positions,  settings, thicknesses,  etc. Twas very fun.
Reply:Nah, actually I'm not familiar with that phrase. Lol.

Reply:I just started my degree program in August, but didn't start welding until January. Last week we did 3/8" plate, open root, overhead.  I had no problem getting full penetration vertical, but overhead...ugh. he insisted on 3/32 gap and landing.  I thought 3/8 gets 1/8  so I did that and it was almost perfect.  Penetration from the restart wasn't quite all the way, but we did the bend test and it was good. Is there a trick to overhead open root?

Reply:Yeah, the camera on my phone sucks.
Reply:Both are overhead. Mine on the bottom. I asked for criticism so I can improve as I strive to be the best.  My instructors say I'm doing very well and it was his idea for a weld-off. The man is 66 years old with a lot of knowledge,  wisdom,  amd experience...detiroriating eyes to go along with it. Lol. It was all in good fun and I'm proud of my 3 months expiernce, 1 day a week, vs his 40+ years.

Reply:What's that supposed to mean? I'm not allowed to be proud? In this case indo think mine look better than hism however I guarantee you give us each something more "real life", atypical, or in the field and he'll blow me away.  Yes, I am proud of what I've accomplished in 3 months,  but i know I have a lot to learn and experience...which is why I asked-so I can improve.

Reply:Enjoy your youth and great eyes.  As they say "Enjoy the moment for it too shall pass with age"    Keep up the hard work  I bet there's a lot of wisdom with his years.   Keep on welding
Reply:I hope one day to be able to help a newb out with my years of experience and wisdom as he has me. OAN, we we discussing lens shades; I usually use 11 or 12. He never uses anything other than 10. Hmmmmm, correlation?
Reply:Another question: what manipulation works best for 4F open root? Say 3/8" v groove,  1/8" opening and landing.
Reply:Looks like a lot of fishing for ....... Here it is.." atta boy" your ready for the firing line.Ok in all seriousness I don't think 3 inches of mig weld proves nothing. You say you respect the man but go on to talk about the set up and how you think it should be done. Then do your own thing. If your getting good results good for you. but to talk about how some one shows or helps youAnd it looks worse is just bragging. Sorry call it like I see it. You have potential but have miles to go.
Reply:Molly,You never welded before January. You weld for three months, and take on real quick. (aka a quick learner)....Then you think your better than the guy who taught you in three months. You should be proud that you can weld better than your instructor, but to say that he's a bad weldor just isn't right. An instructor of any kind should be proud when his student becomes better than himself....You should be thanking him for making you a good weldor....~JohnJust a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Said sideline(often)usually involves Go F*N Fast toys! The best welders I knew took the "real job" approach to provide for retirement, health care(whole family), vacations, credit union, summer off, ability to order killer stuff direct. The others were meatheads(often chanting about"when I were in the XXX/yonder in--insert country--"... with teaching degrees and no life.... that couldn't hold a job at a 7/11.The latter were far more prevalent than the former.

Reply:Im just going to call BS.Only other possible explanation is your instructor is just effing with you and you dont get it.
Reply:Remember after 40 plus years of experience , your eyes are not as good, you can't twist and turn like you use to, and your not as steady. The welds are not as pretty as they use to be either . HOWEVER, they will still pass the test ! I know how this is.What I'm asking and saying isn't portrayed well in writing.  Yes, I am a quick learner. am t just like math, art, etc there are different methods to reach the same destination.  I learn by experimenting and reading/following directions moreso than watching and observing.  Yes,  my instructor is obviously a good welder and he has the experience to show it. I do not. It was his idea for a little head to head.  It was fun.  But guarantee youmgive us each a task list and he'll complete it before me with better results becausemof his experience.  I see people posting pictures on here  all day long asking questions or gloating.  I haven't claimed to be a better welder than him by any means. I am simply proud of my 4" accomplishment. It only looks slightly better than his 4" but who knows about other aspects. I have a long way to go and I know it.  It is good to hesr or read positive reinforcement but I also prefer criticism because I am always looking tomimprove and the best. When I posted this picture i was proud of my work after 3 months and more importantly asking for ways to improve.  I think the more experienced people I get advice from, the better.
