STEADY REST WORK (I didn't mean to do it this way)

This will be multiple posts guys.Well…  I messed up and filled a large center hole in a part, the thing is I usually set or reset the steady rest for the diameter it needs to be while a part is still in the machine. Then I just slide the steady on the ways to where it needs to be. I work with these parts pulled back against the head stock center (so no chuck).Standing there disgusted, I decided to do something I haven’t done for a long time, Sweep the steady rest in using a dial indicator from the tailstock.I'm also doing another thing I haven’t done in a long time, center drill a part between centers. Soooo, I made a video of the setup, and another of the centering operation.In this post are pictures of (1) the end I welded before setting the steady,  (2) the part placed in the steady with a lathe dog clamped on, and just resting on the headstock center, leveled up and eyeballed for center,  (3) a close up of what scared the crap out of me years ago when I was told to do it that way,  (4) the finished center, and  (5) the indicator set up I used.More plus vids in the next post;Matt Attached Images
Reply:The first video in this post shows indicating the part in. I moved the part about .030” on the “X” before starting the video (I work MUCH slower with mirrors). So in real time add a minute or so to the vid time to get an idea as far as set up time.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W2rC5RmObo[/ame]The second video shows center drilling using a lathe dog between centers.  This little dink up probably cost me near an hour, including maybe 5 min for the camera…  It doesn’t seem like I forgot little stuff like this 20-25 years ago, maybe I’m forgetting how much I forgot… I forget.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfQvLZAf7D0[/ame]The pics below show where indicating a steady is useful, and that I actually once worked with real engine lathes making real parts. The suspension tubes shown were some 2500# and by the time you got one jibbed up, set the steady,  jibbed back down, moved the steady and jibbed back up…  You were tired of wrestling that heavy sucker around!Matt Attached Images
