1979 Miller big 40 engine issues.

Hey I'm using a 1979 Miller big 40 to practice pipe welding. When I put the bead in or run a grinder the machine does ok but when I hot pass fill and cap it acts like it wants to die. I changed the fuel filter and put fresh plugs and wires in it. I'm thinking it's the carburetor. Does anyone have any suggestions or maybe some troubleshooting tricks. Thanks.
