I have a question for you pro trailer builders.I am going to stuff a couple spindles in a schedule 80 2" pipe. What im wanting to know is Do I need camber in those axles? They will be for a deckover trailer and they will be roughly 83" wide form hub to hub.The trailer will be rated for 7k lbs is my goal. Its going to be carrying atvs and snowmachines. Any input or advise is appreciated!
Reply:If you want it to wear the tires properly it will need camber.
Reply:Well I have never "chambered" an axle.. well I'm not to worried about tires, i only use the trailer maybe 20x a year. Maybe 2-3000 miles at most. If I wanted to try and camber the tires, how in the world do you figure out how much camber is needed? How do you do it? Press, porta power with a jig?
Reply:Albeit not a trailer axle, I think this guy messed up.  It's a similar problem to your axle question.  Watch the top video first, then the second one.  All I can say is, OUCH!Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Definitely not the way to narrow a housing.
Reply:I think I'm missing the point here. I dont see what this has to do with a trailer axle?

Reply:Originally Posted by welderjI never have either. A 3500 lb axle tube is so cheap you can't come close to building one and come out even. The only reason to do it would be for the experience.
Reply:Originally Posted by shaynoakNO, a axle locally in wasilla is 179$. A spindle kit is 50$, piece of steel is 40$. That's 90$ different. I don't need the experience, I do enjoy building my own stuff. Six roblees here in wasilla said i don't need camber, that it was designed for an over load safety. So I'm going with no camber I think....
Reply:Originally Posted by welderjDon't forget you need spring seats and brake mounts. By the time you do all that you will have to figure your labor at about $.50/hr to come out.If your in Wasilla Alaska I have friends there.Sent from my SCH-I200 using Tapatalk
Reply:A 3500lb cambered axle I just bought here was $69 bucks... with spindles welded in, brake plates and wiring in place. Hubs were under 70 for the pair with hangers and such...Came out around 200 with rims and such.

Reply:Did you talk to trailercraft in Anchorage?  I can't help with your camber question, but I've had much better luck dealing with them than 6 robbers.

Reply:Originally Posted by SuperArcI only showed those videos because they guy was talking about 1) Axles and 2) camber, toe-in/out.  IIRC, he mentioned tire wear.  Like I said initially, the vids were not about "trailer" axles, but the same principle and concerns apply to your situation regarding camber, alignment and tire wear if something is outa whack with an axle.  Of course with the videos, that guy brought on his axle alignment issues upon himself with the chop-n-hack job he did.
Reply:Fully constructed axles are widely available. When I neglected the axles under my travel trailer, a replacement axle that was 1/4" longer that the orginal stock one plus brakes was under $400. Two weekend's work to remove the old one, weld the spring purches, paint and install. Huge improvement since there was a factory defect that shorted both brake wires to ground and had the springs slightly twisted.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:In the future if you want to camber your axle, just heat it.  A few minutes with a rosebud on one side and you can make that thing into a banana.Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller 252 Miller 250xMiller Syncrowave 250Miller AEAD200 LegendMiller 375 Xtreme plasmaLincoln WeldPak 100Victor O/A
