SMAW weld test for AWS certification.

My third semester at the local junior college.  Took my first official (AWS) weld test today for certification. It’s only 1G, 3/8-inch plate, ¼” open root with a back strap; but it was fun.  Passed the visual test, now it’s going to be sent to an X-ray testing facility.  After that it will be cut and put through a root bend and face bend test.  Fingers crossed!Next semester I will go for 3G and possibly 4G.  Cheers!GarTook this picture right after my final cover pass (1 of 2 stringers).  You can only see one stringers here, but there are two. Reply:Why X-ray AND bend test?... when we do our qual's we get to do either one or the other.

Reply:TSCGG13,That’s a fair question brother.  The place I tested at said they are using X-ray for the qualification.  I just happened to ask if when my plate comes back from X-ray, if I could bend test it and have both testing methods indicated on my cert.  The answer was yes.  I just figured it couldn’t hurt to have on my cert that my weld passed X-ray and bend testing.  Power of Blue,Thanks man, my instructor said the same thing. Reply:I would try to learn qn the aws 1 inch d1.1 test it will cert you to 3/16 unlimited thikness  structal steel welding. if the shop dos xray  then bend testing is not nessary
Reply:I have all WPS from Nuc Plant, if interrested I can send some, I'm retired Weld Sup, Weld Engineer , & instructor . Tested many and many of welders. Nice job
