this is my first attempt that this. I'm running a few stringers for the root pass then I'm weaving the rest. I'm running at about 100 amps. It was going pretty good till I got to the top. Maybe I'm letting it get to hot. Any ways to fill that top it with out ruining it? And how doesn't the split weave look?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Ya letting it cool a bit can't hurt. If you are practicing for a test, check the requirements, they might let you run your backer strip long on the starts and stops.TOOLS AND TOYSSMAW Mid States Inc. Reply:Right that's what I was thinking. I'm going to keep busting these out and try to get it down as good as I can. I'm going to finish it up, cut it and bend it, just to see if the practice will pass. Then if it does I'll get set up for the certification. Also my school is offering the DOT test in a couple weeks, and it's free for the students, so I might as well take advantage of it. I'm 16 and I think  if I could pass the DOT, that would be pretty cool. I'm just going to have to fine tune it until I can run a solid weld every time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Where's the backing? Maybe it's just me but I'm confused - are you running 1in thick plate or a gap of 1in? unlimited thickness AWS certification test would be 1in thick plate with a a 1/4in gap, V groove.

Reply:Amps seem low. It seems counter intuitive, but hotter is easier than colder with vertical. You'll need to move faster though.Beads need a lot of work. Consistency is poor, beads look humped and high, looks like undercut on the left side in places, and looks like a lot of slag trapped in a bunch of places ,just to name the few that come to mind right away.I'd say you need to back up a bit 1st. Can you run nice consistent beads vertical for fillets? If so, how about outside corners with the edges just touching and leaving you a V to fill? Are you getting full penetration on the root and making nice consistent beads? Next would be 3/8" bevel buts with backing. Again, can you make nice consistent welds here? No point in going all the way to 1" if you can't get the first 3/8" right. From what I see here, I'm not holding my breath on the 3/8" bevels. If you can do a nice job on the bevels, how well do they bend?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Originally Posted by bruceshultisYes, 1 inch place with backing and 1/4 inch gap. This is just practice for the aws certification. Sorry for the lack of detail, I'm pretty new at all this. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that fairly similar to the DOT test?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I'm a bit of a perfectionist, I'll admit that. As far as your instructors, I've seen guys who are like that. Not my way of helping guys learn. I won't bad mouth someone else though that I can't see or work with. Their teaching style may be different than mine, That doesn't necessarily make it good or bad. Same goes for my style. I'll admit though there are guys out there that probably should not be teaching guys to weld unfortunately. There have been plenty of threads here on vertical stick in the past. Most with picts of guys welds and quite a few I've gone in and circled or made notes on areas that could use work, or areas that are good examples of what to look for. I'd suggest using Google or some other search engine to dig them up as the sites advanced search function can leave things to be desired on occasion. Search terms like weldingweb, dsw or aevald ( or any number of other members), vertical stick, undercut etc will bring up plenty of topics for you to look at and give you other ideas for search terms as well as other linked threads..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. I'll keep on practicing and I'll defiantly keep what you guys said it mind. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:How much of a gap are you starting with between the plates? I don't see a backing strip behind the weld where the plates join?Your cap will not pass a visual inspection on a structural test. Your restarts need work to eliminate the smiley faces. You have too much undercut on the left side toe of the weld. The cap is inconsistent in height and width. Do you have a stop and restart in the root pass? If so, that's where a test piece will be cut and bent backwards against your restart. It looks like I see chipping hammer marks on the right side plate. That's a no no. Your cap just seems so wide to me. As you weld a cap like this going vertical up, the plate gets hotter and hotter as you travel upwards. You can see you lost control of it up at the top. Keep a real short arc length up there. You may have to turn your machine slightly down up at the top of the plate.Last edited by snoeproe; 03-20-2014 at 12:07 AM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Only weave your cap... not anything else... and depending on the code, you might be able to run strings for the cap also.
Reply:aside from the tiny bit of slag stuck it there. She passed. Not to bad for my first attempt with no practiced before.
Reply:Maybe it's just the pict, but the right hand one looks like it's got a crack in the face..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Hold a bare 1/8 welding rod over the defect. If you can see the defect with the 1/8 rod on it, that's a failure. If you can't see the defect with a 1/8 rod on it, it passes.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
