Helping a buddy woth some car trailer modifications....Putting a new floor on it, new lighting and adding some under floor storage. Should be pretty sweet when we're done...Last edited by 7A749; 04-08-2014 at 05:46 PM.
Reply:How will you access the under floor storage when the trailer is loaded? Unload the trailer first?

Reply:The extra weight of the car and tools will slow the trailer down good enough. You don't need brakes! GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:most states require trailers over 3000 lbs to have at least one axle with brakes. not to mention the brakes on the trailer save on replacing the brakes on the tow vehicle. There are no problems. Reply:Not saying its right or wrong but almost every trailer around here either doesn't have brakes or if it does they usually don't work. Most around here don't have a brake controller anyways1982 miller blue star 2E ac/dcHarbor freight flux core posVictor oa

Reply:Where I live only the dumb dumbs will pull a trailer without brakes. However I live in the hills and hardly ever have a level spot. I still would not pull an underbuilt car hauler without brakes. That is ever bit as dangerous to other people as some of the junk trailers every body bitches about. I think you should be read the riot act for such a stupid stunt as pulling a trailer with a car and other storage area without brakes. I hope you get arrested in the first mile. What is the matter with you other people to not say a word, when you would be all over his case if his trailer was unsafe looking with bad welds. Lack of brakes is much worse than a poor built trailer. Mac

Reply:Not defending the guy but a lot of tandem axle trailers were built from the "factory" without brakes. In Wisconsin a trailer under, I believe 4500 pounds doesn't have to have brakes , otherwise on a tandem 1 axle needs brakes.Miller xmt304, Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:All up and down the west coast any trailer that is licensed must have brakes of some kind. Here in Oregon small trailers and specialized trailers do not need a license. However if the trailer with load is over a certain weight it will still need brakes. Mac

Reply:Look guys I didn't build the trailer... Its a factory built trailer that he has had for years... There are ones like this all over in this part of the country...... I'm just helping with it... I just thought it was a cool idea to have the storage under the floor like that...

Reply:A friend rented a mini excavator a few years ago and he needed to move it to another house and his other friend with the truck that originally pulled it to his place "with Brake Controller" wasn't around to move it that day so he asked me to haul it 11 miles with my 1/2 ton Chevy without Brake Controller. I wasn't so sure if it was a good idea. But after some thought I did it anyway. Never again that was a scary ride with no brakes on the trailer and that mini ex. I could feel the weight pushing me around and I almost slid through a stop sign. Thankfully no one else was going down that road. Never again will I pull that much weight without trailer brakes. Reply:I have towed my trailer both ways with and without brakes. Without brakes it is fine you just have to pay more attention ahead of you and slow down earlier. Now I would not haul anything to heavy without brakes to far.I as well towed a mini X on my trailer for around 30 miles round trip. About the same amount of weight and push as when I have both trailers hooked up for camping.
Reply:Brakes are the easiest add on to a trailer, well, after additional lights. You buy the backing plates with the shoes attached, new hubs with the drums, and then simple wiring, nothing but a thing, unless of course you are one of those most blessed among us that have the built in warning system on idiots or even a child chasing a ball into the street events happening.http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...eplacement-kithttp://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...ent-kit-5-boltLast edited by wroughtn_harv; 04-09-2014 at 10:14 AM.life is good

Reply:I'd vote for brakes. Not just a good idea, but it is the law. The 3,000 pound thing is a federal mandate and many states have adopted it. It is about the oh ****, I need to get stopped because some jack wagon pulled out in front of me.

Reply:Many states allow trailers under 3500 lbs gvw to be used without brakes. Here in GA, a lot of guys build two axle trailers with 3500 lb axles and give them a stamp of 3500 lbs...anyone towing over that is on their own. GA requires one brake axle over 3500lbs, but things change IF you cross state lines then your trailer falls under federal law and is required to have all axles with brakes over 3500 lb. Reply:Brakes or no brakes this thing is turning out nice.. I got the diamond tread mocked up today and the bracing where the car will go across the removable panels....
Reply:Nice trailer. My 16' tandem trailer, factory made, has no brakes either and I have hauled cars and trucks with no problems. Like the idea of the anti theft storage too.Last edited by milomilo; 04-13-2014 at 06:53 PM.ChrisAuction Addict
