here are a few gate designs. the total height is about 6.3' and the width is 16 feetthe drawings are just concepts, pretty close to scale, but not exact done in photoshop.the gates will be aluminum and in these drawings all the tube is 2"I'm going to make a gate for my driveway and thought to myself, Im not going to live here forever, so might as well have it make the property look as good as possible for possible John doe who might buy it latter. I suppose I could play it safe and copy a typical gate design, but these would be fairly easy to do with my harbor freight roller. which one do you think would sell the best to the general public or maybe you think they are all junk?just seeking some honest feedback. thanks.

Reply:I like number one also. Some kind of Big Blue constant current welding machineAnother smaller yet, Blue machine (it's got wire in it)
Reply:1 and 2 are too, umm, rainbow-ish for me. Like the arch-window looking design where they intersect. Maybe split that arch between the two panels...maybe 3 arches side to side, the center one split. Maybe horizontals between the 3 arches at the intersect points.Get rid of the rainbows.

Reply:You just started welding recently, and have your own motives on making money off of other peoples skills and brains, and although you told me I'm on your ignore list I don't really care, but I don't think you would be capable of any of that. So who's the scab making you money in this operation? I know it ain't yourself. Hmm?I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:I'll be the odd voice: I kind of like No. 3, but only if you reverse the left gate. Having the high and low sides on the same side rather than mirrored destroys the symmetry. And--point of personal opinion--I think it would look best with the high "dots" in the middle rather than on the outside.Which would sell the best? Depends upon the customer. No. 3 is definitely more modern, and would sell to a modern clientele; if you're in a more conservative area, you need to be more traditional. Reply:I would like to see a picture of where it is going. To me design needs to fit the surroundings not just going to farm and fleet and buying a 16' farm gate.
Reply:each will see in their own right, it's just a matter of what the buyer wants. I wouldn't prebuild a gate for sale. To many variables. Road with, grade, opening function, etc. etc. etc. but having those models as examples of what can be done is a good start. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:thanks for all the feedback. I'm still looking over my options. I'm getting a scroll bender hopefully this week. I'll see what I can make with it and see if that gives me some new ideas.
Reply:i'd like #3 if he curves were made continuous across the gate like a series of hills with the balls at places along the road. I'd want it to flow from one side or the other to the opposite side. Reply:I like No. 4 also but think it would look better if the spacing were more uniform.
Reply:1 & 3. For 3 I think I'd be cool to give the option to cut out the house number into one of the larger circles...
Reply:Number 3 but mirror on side instead of copy. Better flow.#1 would be my choice.
Reply:Number 1 is no good. You do realize with # 1, you've custom made a ladder for theives to climb and jump over in less than 5 seconds, right? #2 is semi ok, but many won't like the weight and busyness. I find #3 to be too 'modern'.And #4 is just rust/oxidization waiting to happen. Way too many water holders. Same can be said for #2, as well.I'd only customize designs like this upon customer request, or for myself. Otherwise, stick to traditional straight pickets. Fab shop I worked at would make an extra panel of every railing they did, and mount it to the wall. They had close to 2 dozen on display. If you do end up doing a custom fence, gate or railing job, I recommend doing the same. Yeah, its expensive, and eats into your profit in the early going, but customers can SEE it, and you've proven you can build it. You also save time having something to make a jig from, which means much more profit down the road.Your alternative is to take lots of pics.Last edited by Daeyel; 02-28-2014 at 07:59 AM.

Reply:I would stick with traditional straight pickets. No one will see that as a negative, but they may see some of these designs as off putting to them. Plus if these are your first gates, start simple. It's not always easy getting everything perfect on a straight picket design, and with all these radii it'll be a nightmare if you're inexperienced. I have a lot of practice with a bender and it would take me a lot of patience (time) to get all the pieces correct for these designs full of radii. You said you don't have the bender yet, there's a fairly steep learning curve to make identical pieces with a manual bender.

Reply:Whichever one comes with an automatic opener lol. I tacked together some fence top rail after somebody drove up in yard and went shopping in my tool box. Nothing worse than getting home at night in a heavy rain to unlock, open, drive thru, close and lock again.
Reply:These are all really great designs, I think the #1 gate is a really good choice. What color is the gate going to be? |
