Hi all, I'm making a replacement BBQ grill using 304 stainless.  I know I should use a 308 electrode but I already have some 309/309L lincoln electrodes.  Also a small box of 308 has been hard to find.Do you think I'm ok just using the 309 filler? Thanks again,Matt
Reply:I'd use the 309. It's a grill. This page has more details. http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...al-detail.aspx Some 308L applications may be substituted with 309L filler metal, but 316L or 316 applications generally require molybdenum and 309L contains no molybdenum.

Reply:My impression is that it is usually ok to use the higher number filler on lower numbered plate.  The corrosion resistance is higher with the higher numbered filler in stainless.  I tried to get some 317 filler for my 316 SS water heater the other day, but just gave up and used the more common 316L filler.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:Well I know most good quality stainless pans are made of 304 (18/8).  My thoughts are that 304 stainless is made for high temperature applications and would never get hot enough to release anything toxic just from the heat on a natural gas or propane grill.    The 309 rods are mostly used to join stainless to mild steel but I'm not sure what else they contain.  Lincoln recommends the 308/308L rods for 304 - that's not to say 309 wouldn't work, it's just not best practice.  I'm probably being over paranoid and maybe you're yanking my chain a bit but I was just wondering what others thoughts were.Matt
Reply:I use 309,308,316,& 321 stick and tig fill wires in food processing plants. All are food safe, and won't corrode. To reiterate, is a grill. You'll be fine. Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk

Reply:It's all gonna rust after it gets hot, anyway.
Reply:A TIG machine and good clamps = no filler needed at all....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Just don't grill any meat on it.  That stuff is bad for you. "USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
