I am considering getting some steel and cutting my own shanks out of it. They are 3/4" thick about 7" wide at the top and 5" or so at the bottom, and 32" long. They run in the dirt and wear. I am hard surfacing but would like to have several sets so we can rotate them during the season. So the question is what kind of steel should I use? I need to be able to cut it, and drill 4 holes in it. I thought I had a picture of one but can't find it . Thanks
Reply:I'd make them out of ar400 and torch cut the holes of they don't have to be too exact

Reply:The holes do have to be exact.  The ones I've worked on had one hole for a pivot bolt and one for a shear pin.  The shear pin hole had a hardened bushing pressed in.My name's not Jim....

Reply:We used to make shanks for deep ripping with a D9 by making a cardboard template of an existing shank and having them burned out of T1 material.  As I remember (this was quite a few years ago) the mounting hole was burned out.  We would drill the hole for the cross pin to hold on the replaceable wear point or tooth ourselves.Dirk
Reply:The ones on my box blade were cut out of some sort of AR type plate. They were cheaper to buy than make.
Reply:Sorry I thought I had a picture but could not find it and did not want to go back to the shop.First picture is the whole shank with a tape measure and framing square for reference second and third are top and bottom, fourth shows the thickness this one has been built up and hard surface applied. They are approx 8 x 32 x 3/4 thick I only need four holes. If I can cut it with a plasma and drill it I can get 17 out of a 4 x8 sheet .I can buy new ones they are $287. Each. I thought it might be worth a try since I wanted 10 or so. Thanks for your replays

Reply:So the "NEW" price is $287.00 Each, OUCH.  How long do they normally last?Everlast PowerPro 256, Everlast W300 Cooler, Everlast Cart 250Millermatic 211, Spoolgun 100, Miller HD CartJackson W60 Truesight Digital Auto Darkening, Victor 315 Torch sitting on a Harper 830-86 cart
Reply:It depends on how much we can run it, maybe  a couple of seasons. It also takes a wear strip and point. I hard surfaced some last fall and it took 2-3 days to take the hard surface off on the edge. My hope was to have 2-3 sets and change before they get too bad . There is 8 in a set.
Reply:These are what I work on.  They're about 1-1/4" thick.  Roughly every 3 years it seems.  Mostly build up.  I've straightened a few, but I don't think they have had to replace any. Attached ImagesLast edited by Boostinjdm; 08-05-2015 at 11:27 PM.My name's not Jim....
Reply:sounds like Boostin has done it.    I'm also thinkin anyone from Chowchilla, may have had one as a play toy growing up.     I've been to  chowchilla twice.     first time was a vivid eventful weekend/experiance at the drag boat races 20+ yrs ago, that is still brought up.    Chowchilla is a place that you better smile when you say the name.   .  The name  Dirk sounds european to me, so how did you land in a cowboy place like that.    I've heard about the river alligator in the 90s,  then the unfortunate ending of  local weld/fab/mach biz,  captain bob in the aughts.    Have you heard of either?

Reply:The name Dirk is in part due to being the grandson of Scottish immigrants. For some reason they stopped racing the drag boats here a number of years ago, it's not like there is any water in Berenda Reservoir now anyway. As far as Captain Bob goes he was a "colorful" character to say the least.  Captain Bob drank, I mean like nothing you have ever seen drinking.  He had a float in the parade every year that was some kind of boat, let's just say Bob was feeling no pain every year as he rode his boat/float down Robertson Blvd. in the parade....All this drinking led to losing his shop and time in jail.  When the city maintenance dept. needed welding/fab work done they would actually check him out of jail to do the work and then return him to the pokey.Bob's best known drinking escapade actually involves the alligator, he was arrested one night (yes he'd been drinking again) in a boat out on Berenda Reservoir trying to hunt the alligator.  Eventually the Sheriff's Dept. went out and shot the alligator.I guess Bob got religion and sobered up at the end, he had a little spot at Robertson Blvd. and Hwy 152 you could see a shed with some equipment under it and of course the ultralight airplane that he was killed in.Dirk
Reply:Thanks Dirk for the reply.    They may have stopped the boat races, cuz the crowds were getting to large, and if things got out a hand, the authorites in the area don't have large enough staff to take control.     Thats only a guess, i 've seen that w/ other similar situations.   To many unwanted outsiders coming in for a place like that maybe.  Yea, i heard your irrigation disrtict is issueing no water at all to the farmers this year, is that right?   Well, i guess the stories i had heard about the captain weren't exaggerated then.    The remeber when the alligator made bay area news, when they shut the river/resevoir down to the public.     I didn't know they actually got it.     Do you know how big it was, or its size?     My gosh, lucky that thing didn't get a skier or swimmer.   I think i'd rather deal w/ a shark rather than an alligator if i had to choose one.     LOL, I did hear about captain bob getting arrested hunting the thing.     I heard he was in some little  boat thing, and was armed w/ a bottle for himself, a flashlight, one of those little 3 pronged spears to get frogs w/, and some sort of chintsy small pistol.     I didn't know about his jail stints,  or his city relations      I did know it ended in an ultralite.    All i heard was that he flew in the side of the freeway or something.    Do i have that right, or do they know what caused it or what went wrong?Last edited by 123weld; 08-07-2015 at 01:39 AM.
Reply:I hav always bought mine from a company in sacramento called "cutting edge supply", I don't know if they are nationwide or if they deliver or not.  They have solved several problems issues by having them use more mounting holes or other modifications, sometimes different steels.  Very easy to work with for custom blades and shanks.
Reply:Boostinjdm, that is a nice repair on those shanks. I ordered a sheet of ar400 so I will keep you posted how it goes. If nothing else I will have a nice table. Thanks for all the replies.
Reply:Thanks.  Some of them were absolutely terrible.  Missing 2" off the bottom.  After the first few I made an aluminum template to use as a guide.  They were all ground to fit snugly into new tips.  No wiggling allowed.  The bolts last longer that way.  Any movement would eventually shear off the bolts. My name's not Jim....
