Sofia, my 3rd grader, has a project that she is building for the invention convention at school. Her project is a remote control minder/finder. She is building the "remote corral" out of 22 gauge sheet. She made hooks out of some 1/8th rod, and welded them to the "corral". We have a set of key finders that she will hot glue to the remotes. The key finder beeps when you push a button on the base station so you can find your keys. This is being adapted to find the remotes when you lose one. Also the key finder will allow you to hand the remotes on the "remote corral". The theme of the invention convention was to solve a common problem. We are always misplacing the TV remotes, so this is her answer. More pictures to follow as she progresses. She is doing >90% of the work, and ALL of the welding. Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:thats awesome that your getting your daughter into welding and metalworking at a young age, i have a nephew thats almost 8 and i want to get him into welding within the next year or so.
Reply:Really great to see this. Sad thing is the instructor will probably think you did it for her... Be sure and give her copies of the picts so she can do a binder showing her doing the work..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Thanks.  Actually the pictures are part of the submission.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:That is great man, tell her great job! And definitely let the pics go with it. Hope she sticks with it. I know she's very young, but have her look at Lorelei Sims @ www.blacksmithchic.com. I think that will help keep her motivated seeing another female craftsman.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:BTW, thanks to BD1, Sofia, my other daughter Grace, and my lovely bride all now want a plasma cutter...I need to strike while the iron is hot! Sofia bugs me every day "dad, what else can we weld??"Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:unfortunately, my 12 year old son has no interest either. I have to force him to learn some of this stuff, and it is a balancing act for me. I don't want to force him so much that he ends up hating working with his hands, but on the other hand, I come from a long line of blue collar guys, and even though I am an accountant now, in the past I earned my living in various jobs: paramedic, firefighter, dishwasher groundskeeper and mechanic. I want my son to be able to fix things and be self sufficient. My dad taught me to turn a wrench, to run a lathe, to shoot and to fish, among other things. I want my son to at least have a basic proficiency in some of these things. Fishing and hunting he loves. turning a wrench, not so much.  My wife and daughters on the other hand can't seem to get enough of this stuff.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Here are the pictures of the nearly finished project. The pictures of her completing the project are yet to be glued to the poster board. The key fobs hot glued to the remotes sound a chime when you push the corresponding button on the control panel at the top of the steel plate In addition, the key fobs allow you to hang up your remotes and keep them stored in one place (hence the steel plate with the hooks she made by hand and welded on herself. Her assignment was to solve a common household problem, and she decided to tackle the issue of lost remotes. Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Hey, Louie. She is a lucky girl and you are a lucky DAD. You will both look back at this project one day with great memories.I tried to get both my boys interested, but it did not take. Now that they are grown, both have said "I wish I had paid attention when you were trying to teach me how to . . .".Thanks for posting and keep up the welding!Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
