I have ZERO....ZIP...NADA.....experience with mill working.  I DO NOT know how to use even basic lathes or mills.  Any of you know of a website like this one for learning / using a mill or even how to maximize the abilities of a good drill press?FWIW....I have only used a drill press for basic drill work....holes and making notches in tubing.thanxJDLincoln IdealArc 250 AC/DC  w/ tigLincoln Ranger 8Miller Millermatic 140Victor Cutting setForney gas welding setMilwaukee power-tools3 legged dog named SpeedyFridge full of Diet Coke1 angry wife2 loud kids
Reply:I'm in the same boat as you, although I have a small lathe, and and slowly learning..Im saving up for a small mill..I always check out these forums..There is a wealth of knowledge if you search..http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/index.php
Reply:Won't be free, but I suggest Lindsays technical books: http://www.lindsaybks.com/There are some freebies on a couple of torrent sites, but they are scattered with few seeders and definitely not the highest quality info.
Reply:darthwelder,Here's some that should have some basic info....and some really advanced info...ya just gotta wade thru a lot of threads.http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/index.phphttp://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/http://www.machinistweb.com/forum/index.phpFor lathes, the basic text is a book titled "How To Run A Lathe" (duh!) put out by South Bend Lathe Co.  The company is kaput but the book is still available...check out ebay....about $10 if I remember correctly.I don't know if there's a comparable book for milling machines but if I run across one I'll send you a PM.Anything in particular you need to know?  I'm no expert machinist but I've been playing around with this stuff on and off for about 45 years and might be able to give you some pointers.  Best thing I could offer right now is to get some scrap aluminum, few end mills, and a little paint thinner (coolant...WD40 also works) and try a few cuts.  I'd start out with the cheap chicom end mills cus you're probably going to burn up a few til you get the basics sorted out.  Good luck and have fun....Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor

Reply:Try eBay for tech school textbooks for machine work. They usually are in the $10-$20 range and give a well rounded introduction to the various machine tools. The series "Machine Shop Practice" by Karl Moltrecht is a good place to start. http://cgi.ebay.com/Machine-Shop-Ope...item4cf4de1db5http://cgi.ebay.com/Machine-Tool-Pra...item5ade791f4dBTW, South Bend Lathe is still with us. Now owned by the same man that owns Grizzly tools. New models are Asian sourced, but odds and ends for the old machines as well as build cards are available through Grizzly.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:Check with your local high school or Vocational schools and see if they offer any classes you can take.  Do you know any machinists that might give you a few pointers?
