Anyone ever make a basket like this?  Looking for things to consider before I dive in.  Weight being number 1, ease of removal/ installation being the second.  Ideas and thoughts/ considerations would be wonderful. This would definitely be something cool to have in an off road vehicle for obvious reasons.
Reply:well that pic is of a rescue basket/stretcher.  for a standard roof rack, take into consideration what you will be using it for, how much weight you ever plan to put on it. then build it, without over doing it. for me, when I do the one on my jeep, I will likely use 1"x.063 4130  or 1" 14 gauge mild steel tube. All i'll have on it is a few lights, maybe a tire for a bit, jack, and occasionally a few other misc. items, nothing heavier than a tire/wheel or cooler its just a roof rack/carrier, not a roll cage, keep that in mind Last edited by sausage450r; 05-03-2014 at 01:30 AM.'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems
Reply:Understand it is a rescue basket/ stretcher, but a great multi purpose roof rack for rock crawling/ off roading. Id be using it for throwing cooler's and misc items that won't fit in the truck, but, you never know.  Weight, probably a max of 400 lbs.
Reply:also need to consider what it's being mounted too, and if that can hold the load intended. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:400 pounds is also a huge load for a roof rack. Most roofs are not going to support that much weight for long.
Reply:I have a 2011 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X with a pre existing roof rack, and just looking to make it useable/ give it some personalization. I like the idea of every tool being a multipurpose tool.  If I can use my rack for more than one thing, I will.
Reply:try search tubular roof rack build on google and then look at images. https://www.google.com/search?q=tubu...w=1600&bih=756

Reply:Are you going to be using it for people or rescues? If not, there are a lot of outdated ones at fire departments you might be able to talk them out of. If it is for rescue, I wouldn't modify it. Those have changed quite a bit over the years, and are very lightweight for what they do. I have seen many with stress cracks on existing ones.  There may be a lot of liability messing with one that is ins service.

Reply:The air force should be using SKED plastic boards I believe. So they may have some.
Reply:what's the rated load for the Nissan Rack? I want to say the load on my SUV's is only 300 lbs. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:I think the rating is 300Lbs max, but most times, I load all my $hit in the back of my truck, but you never know when you could use more carrying capacity.  Not sure what the base has, Gonna head up tomorrow.  Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
