So I took my weld test and interview today. It was a 3G on half inch plate. It went well especially on my root which was flush with a slightly raised bead. The cap however I made a mistake on by getting the gun stuck causing a heavy spot. Mig root and HP flux core the rest. They said "it's a little rougher than we would like but we will bend it and see. I wire wheeled each pass and had no porosity. I ran the root at 19.5V wire speed at 200IPM hot pass was 20.5V and the fill and cap was 21.5 and 250IPM. I would like to hear opinions and hear constructive criticism! Thanks
Reply:It look's like your either struggling to get comfortable, or your focusing on the centre of the weld pool and not where the toe of your weld is, which may be causing the wonky looking weld, it might be easier (if the weld procedure allow's) for you to do a weave cap, rather then stringer's, the cap is also on the heavy side for a half inch plate, i would aim for around 1/8 inch reinforcement on the cap (definitely no more then this, a little less would be acceptable), and keeping the weld toe just over the edge of the top of the vee prep, perhaps .020-.040 of an inch over on each side, where is it seems you've gone pretty close on the left hand side of the weld, but 1/8-3/16th's over on the right and side. The root run is very nice indeed, with some practice it could improve, but if you can do that consistently, your doing well. But, you've pretty drastically under-filled both the start, and finish of the weld, personally if I were to fail that weld, that would be the reason, you'll get neater on your cap, but failing to properly finish a weld is a big no-no as far as I'm concerned, and something that could use some practice.Last edited by ttoks; 03-28-2014 at 10:14 PM. |
