Hello. I am new to this forum. It seem that are a lot of very knowledgable people here. I am new to welding and just picked up a Lincoln weldanpower 225 g7. I had a few questions that I thought someone here could answer. 1. How am I supposed to fine tune the amperage. By this I mean if 70 amps is to cold and 90 is too hot how to I get something in between. I learned on an old solar buzz box that had a bar that slid so you could fine tune your amperage.2. What year was my welder manufactured?3. Is there anywhere that I can fine a new cover for it. By cover I mean the red piece of metal that covers the generator itself. Thanks for your time, and I will be looking forward to your insight. -Jake
Reply:David R (moderator) has one of these and would be more prepared to answer ANY questions you have. He's had one for quite a few years now and has probably done it, seen it, repaired it all. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:1, The big Taps are max amps from the winding with the fine set on 10.  So if its on 90 and 10 on the fine, you should have 90 amps.  turn the fine down to 9 and you have 90% of the coarse setting.  about 81 amps.  This is how the book described it.    I found fine on 7, use the taps for size of rod and fine tune from there.  I ran 1/8 7018 on 125 & 7 on the fine give or take.  Worked for me.I bought mine in '87.  The serial # may have the year in it.  Mine does.  If you get the code # off the machine you can go to lincoln electric.com and download a manual for free. Its a nice machine, I was using mine a couple weeks ago.  I bought a ranger 250 last year and its proof lincoln is the caddy of welders. That machine will run an LN-25 nice!DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks for the replies. Still a little foggy on the fine tuning. It just doesn't make sense to me. If you have it on 90 amps and use the output controller on 3 (30%) you would have only 27 amps. Is that is correct? Thanks. -Jake
Reply:The knob with the 1 thru 10 is a percentage setting. Each number on the dial is 10% of whatever the range in amps is on the tap you selected.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT

Reply:Thanks for all of your help. You guys are great. I hope this machine lasts for a while. LOL I can't afford another one. David what setting should i use to run 1/8" 6010 rod. I know DC+ but what amperage? I am looking to leran how to weld pipe. My buddy does it and says they are always looking for certified pipe welders. He told me to run a root pass in 1/8" 6010, and to cover that with a 3/32 7018 cover pass. What is your insight?
Reply:I don't run much 6010 at all.  I have never welded pipe, just repair welding and some structural.  I run 3/32 7018 on tap 90 and 7 on the fine.  Up one click on the tap for 1/8".Most of the welding I have done with that machine was with an LN-25 loaded with bare wire and C02 as a gas.  Wire speed 175, volts between 7 and 8.When using it last time, I noticed it has plenty of arc force.  Great for out of position welding.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
