I just about saved enough money to go see that doctor, who specializes in helping people that won't stop accumulating welders. Then... I saw this for sale!  Attachment 14052 That original hand crank starter handle, still hanging on it's bracket, was too much to resist!I took the seller's word that it ran good. With fresh fuel, it started immediately. Runs good, welds good. No smoke or misfire, even when "dogging", while burning 1/4" rod. Attachment 14053But the people wanted to know: Can the old Shield-Arcs really stick weld rusty thin muffler pipe?Attachment 14054Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:20 PM.
Reply:The big question is how much...or do I NOT want to know...lolAnything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:Looks pretty well taken care of for an old machine.
Reply:Looks like they called that machine an SA200 also. I have seen the two cylinder Wisconsin, but not the four. Must be a V4FD engine? I'll bet that machine has been setting in some farmer's barn for close to 60 years. Did it have a separate starter? Come to think of it, it must have as that is a battery on the side, right? 6 volt? Thanks for the pictures. weldersales
Reply:Pretty cool.  It looks like it has the Wisconsin VG-4 engine on it.  That was their smaller flat head version w/ about 35hp.  They also make a larger 65hp V-4 with overhead valves.  Be sure it has good airflow under continuous loads.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Too Cool!! weld it like you own it
Reply:It sure laid a nice bead with that baseball bat !! Zap gets all the good jobs and you get all the good deals !! Everything I find is either overpriced or 1200 miles away Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:I leaned how to weld with one of those.  That was all my dad had.  Crank to start.  He had an electric starter for it like the one in the picture, but it was less hassle to crank it by hand.  I made a lot of money thawing pipes with it when I was in college......Starting to feel like one of the old guys.  My dad bought his from a rental fleet for $100.00 with cables Around 1970  VF4D engine.  You can back the throttle down on it to change the arc. We learned if it didn't start on the third crank, some thing was wrong and fix it.  When I was about 15, I used to siphon the gas out of it for my motorcycle.   Ticked my dad off.  Once I borrowed it and didn't wind up the cables right and lost the stinger.Another time I was going down a bumpy road towing it with my 46 willys, I looked in the mirror and it was upsidedown in the air.  Smashed the manifolds and some sheet metal damage.  My dad said " I need it for saturday".  I got it fixed by then.DavidThanks for the memories!Last edited by David R; 11-21-2007 at 07:09 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
