A few years ago I made a little bench......... Reply:Very nice! Is there a cross member under the wood?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:Cool! You just gave me an idea. Flawless work.
Reply:Looks great ! Hows the Metabo working out ??  Since you only wore one glove you could have gotten your nails done for the video.
Reply:Man that looks awesome.... I checked out your etsy store the other day and I was quite impressed with your items. I was even more impressed with the prices your selling them for (quite low). I have been wanted to do something similar but I just feel that with the high prices for the materials involved and the fact that I still want to stay competitive and actually sell some things, It seems like to stay competitive you almost have to work for free. Since you have been in it awhile now do you see the same thing? Those dominos you have made out of stainless are not cheap in materials and it seems like a lot of time were put into them as well, I would feel like I would want almost double what your charging just for the labor put into them + the material cost. How do you justify your time? I try to think of it as im getting paid to practice on free material but eventually I want to turn a profit.

Reply:Originally Posted by FexalNick...... thanks for the reply.........Most of my creations are sold low.... Mostly because I'm a nobody in the world of fabricators...... For example..... my little company... F2 Metalworks made $200 gross the first year (2012).... then $1500 in 2013...... i'm aiming for $10K this year........ Gross..... not Profit....Yes.... I would like to make a profit..... and on some projects (not posted on ETSY) I can spend $4 and sell it for $150......... but often...... based on the cost to design... build... install an ad hoc piece..... I barely break even.....The dominoes were an accident and they sell..... and keep me in gas and filler metal..... I don't count my hours in the price....... since my tools are the reason it takes me so long........I'm learning that to be a job shop..... and student who wants to make a name for himself.... the road is long....One day I hope to be able to charge good money for my time.... but I'm not there yet......More tools... more skill..... I will charge what my confidence allows........
Reply:Fex, first off I think the bench looks great.   Now on to business...There are 3 price point ranges in furniture.1. Low end/cheap.  Hard to compete with ikea and cheap Chinese $hit.2. Middle of the road.  Market is flooded with this stuff.  Restoration hardware, room and board, the list goes on...3.  High end and custom made/ expensive. Small batch or one off custom peices that are hand made here in America!  This is where you belong. You have talent so exploit it.  Find some local high end stores and promote yourself.  High end stores cater to high end clients and it will give you the kind of exposure you need.  Etsy is okay but doesn't cater to the elite as much.  Designers are typically who do the buying for high end clients, they have to pay someone to tell them what the like  Offer custom size and designs  and you will go far my freind.Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
