Will a 8000 watt 10000 peak generator satisfy my welding needs?

Reply:depends on the welder. 8000 watts at 230 volts is 35 amps. You can run a HH210 MVP on 24 amps. But the Hobart Stickmate needs 47 amps at full load.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Louie while that may be true based on numbers, in reality things don't always work so neatly.Lincoln lists about 50 amps 230v required to run an AC 225 transformer stick machine off line power. So based on that you'd think you could go max power off an 11.5 KW gen set. Less since many guys run these of 30 amp dryer circuits at reduced power. However Lincoln recommends at least a 15 KW genny to run those. I know several guys who have tried to run these off mid size gensets that the math says should work. In reality they won't weld even though the math says they should be getting enough power.Issue is you have several factors all ganging up at once when trying to power heavy draw equipment off generators. You have inefficiency at both ends, as well as that you need the extra output so the genny can throttle up when it senses a load. Add things like voltage drop either due to Rpm's not correct, or loss in lines, and things just don't work out in the real world like the math says it should..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
