Is this the right mask and filter for galvanize fence building. Buy [ame]http://www.amazon.com/3M-Facepiece-Respirator-6291-Particulate/dp/B000FTEDMM/ref=pd_cp_hi_3[/ame]Thanks VernLast edited by Vern2; 10-31-2009 at 10:33 PM.
Reply:If it seals to your face, it will go a long way to keeping the crud out of your lungs. To know for sure is to buy filters made to suppress the out gassing of the material you are using. Best to go to your MSDS for that info and then buy the appropriate filters.3M has this to say:When properly fitted, use in a variety of applications including welding, brazing, torch cutting, metal pouring, soldering, and exposure to lead, asbestos, cadmium, arsenic, and MDA for concentrations up to 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) with half facepieces or 50 times PEL with full facepieces. Full facepieces must be quantitatively fit tested to claim assigned protection factor above 10 in negative pressure mode. Do not use in environments that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).Last edited by ArgonWelding; 10-31-2009 at 11:46 PM.Reason: upaded infoBill LambertArgon WeldingABQ NMSic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc

Reply:Ditto, that's the one my LWS recommended to me, and it's proven to me its worth. I was welding galvanized yesterday while wearing it... Works great.I also use dust masks when grinding. Every step you can take to keep crud out of the nose or lungs is worth it in my book! The soldering toys pay for the welding toys.Hakko 928 dual iron, 4xHakko 936Madell 850D Hot Air SMT ReworkMiller 252, HTP Invertig 201 AC/DC, and a Hypertherm 45.
Reply:Thank you guys. It's on my list to buy.Great replies!Vern

Reply:Remember that with galvanized material you are dealing with Zinc which, when welded or burnt will create Zinc Oxide GAS, not dust, this is what OSHA has to say:ZINCZinc is used in large quantities in the manufacture of brass, galvanized metals, and various other alloys. Inhalation of zinc oxide fumes can occur when welding or cutting on zinc-coated metals. Exposure to these fumes is known to cause metal fume fever. Symptoms of metal fume fever are very similar to those of common influenza. They include fever (rarely exceeding 102o F), chills, nausea, dryness of the throat, cough, fatigue, and general weakness and aching of the head and body. The victim may sweat profusely for a few hours, after which the body temperature begins to return to normal. The symptoms of metal fume fever have rarely, if ever, lasted beyond 24 hours. The subject can then appear to be more susceptible to the onset of this condition on Mondays or on weekdays following a holiday than they are on other days. Now they say this has no long term affect but I am a little skeptical that something that can knock you on your a$$ for a day is harmless. That being said when working outdoors on a fence there is so much open air it shouldn't be an issue. If you are using an MSA half-mask the filters should say they are made to protect you from the product of concern, I had an asbestos mask at Thompson mine for about 2 years. Also any mask must be properly fit tested to ensure that the thing will work properly.
Reply:look up the Cartridge number on the 3 m web site, it will tell you what gas/dust this cartridge is good for, also the cartridge came in a sealed package, the package has a 1-800 number on it and you have the right to call them and ask if it is the correct mask. I guarentee your boss wants you using the right maskNo job is done until the paperwork is done.
Reply:I used a white mask, with a small charcoal filter on it (i think?) that filters the air.Worked good I assume, considering I didn't get metal fume fever! Then then again I ground most of all the galvanizing off of the area I was welding, and then some (was hot dipped)... so I'm not sure if I really welded any galvanized parts... considering it didnt pop on my tungsten or turn white while welding ;]
Reply:I had a great welder/fabricator at Snap Lake http://www.debeerscanada.com/files_2...factsheet.html I was out for my 2 weeks off when they found out he had a brain tumour. He died a week or two later. Now I am not saying that the occupation of welding is going to give you brain cancer but you have to really think about what is happening...burning iron mixed with all the other fun stuff to make today's alloys (manganese, cadmium, tungsten, etc) Basically when welding you can expect to be inhaling everything on the right hand side of the periodic table. In Canada the employer is responsible for providing you with the safety gear required to allow you to do your job safely. Make sure he DOES IT!!! Fume hoods, respirators, anything that can make you safer. He is earning money off of your labour, make sure he gives you the tools to make you safe. End rant.

Reply:If you're welding that garbage try to find a little battery powered fan to sit next to you to keep that crap from getting up under your shield. Your eyes absorb toxins too ! I refuse to work with it unless I'm outside. Many double the fun by using flux core on it.These boyz have some good info.http://www.gaa.com.au/index.php?page=weldingBubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
