I know this sounds like a strange question. I need to install a 220V outlet in my garage for a medium sized heater. I would like to install the most common outlet/plug configuration for being able to use a 220V welder someday in the future. The plug will be next to the garage door so I can weld outside on my driveway (welding in my garage would make me nervous). Does Lincoln and Miller use the same type of plug? I'd like suggestions from people that KNOW this type of thing. Thanks,Tim
Reply:Plug size for a welder depends on the size of your welder. My 175 miller uses a 30 amp plug while my 300 amp stick uses a 50 amp plug. Depending on the size of welder you may want to think twice about using this for your welder depending on you heaters amp rating. You wont want to have too big of breaker for one or the other. If nothing else you can always change on end or I have made cheater adapters to fit variious plugs.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:I bought my welder prior to doing the wiring.  Then I changed the plug on the welder to match the Range Receptical I installed.  I chose a range receptacle and matching plug, because they were less expensive than the style that match the welder.  I also made an extension cord with 8 guage SO cable that I use for both the welder and the table saw (one at a time). I did call Hobart and ask if changing the plug would violate the warranty, they gave me the okay.Because I fed the welder/saw receptacle from the main panel, not a sub-panel, I connected the welder case ground directly to the neutral.Just because this is what I did, you are free to do what you please.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor
Reply:You need to match your outlet to the size of your breaker and the wire gauge going to the outlet, not match your outlet to what is on your welder.  Not to toot my own horn but I am a journeyman wireman so you can trust that I KNOW what I'm talking about.Last edited by Sparky0908; 05-04-2011 at 09:26 PM.

Reply:Thanks for all the help guys. I have an electrician that knows his stuff comming over to do a correct install of the plug(s). My heater is a 20Amp and I have an old tombstone style stick welder and we are going to match the plug and wiring for it. SO......Im having two plugs (different configurations) installed and he is installing the correct breakers for each. No sense risking my garage and the things in it to save a few bucks. Just one less thing to have in the back of my mind.thanks again!Tim
Reply:Well that is better than "Blackie"  ))
