Hi there I just started a new job and the shop uses .035 metal core from Blackstone? Anyways my welds are looking kind of fat in the middle section with a bit of overoll over the bottom toe and I am working at trying to get a nice flat consistent weld profile but I appreciate any tips or techniques greatly! I should also add that material thickness is anywhere from 1/8" mild steel to 3/4" mild.Last edited by misterB; 08-29-2015 at 05:39 PM.
Reply:If you are welding 3/4 with small wire you will need multiple passes to make a half inch fillet for that thickness.  You can do a half inch fillet but I would recommend three passes to get a nice appearance.  If you try to lay down too large a bead then it will roll over on the toe as you describe.  Your gun should be straight on or up to ten degrees leading of following.  For heavy material I slightly drag with a whipping motion much like welding with E 6010.  It guarantees that I burn into the root as I travel along then filling the puddle behind to create the shape of the bead.   Your wire would be pointed at the inside corner of the joint at 45 dgrees but one diameter lowered towards the flat side on a horizontal weld.  With .035 wire it is hardly anything at all.  Avoid raising the aiming point to limit possible undercut.   For 1/8th sheet keep your travel speed up since you do not need a large weld.
Reply:Awesome thanks for the tips! Any advice for the fat throat of my weld, I mean the bulge in the center part that makes it convex in certain lights?
