Late nights in your house garage and noise

What do you guys do?  Push your luck until the neighbor complains?  Closing the garage doors is enough to keep grinder noise down? Maybe I need something like a port a band to cut metal silently? Right now I stop around 9.30 pm

Reply:insulate and dry wall the interior walls of your garage. I started off in my 2 car garage, it was insulated and sheet rocked, even the over head door was insulated. Reply:I think the grinder is the single loudest tool I have.  I try to shut it down around 9 or 10pm.  I may fire it up for a few seconds if I absolutely have to until 11pm.  I shut the air compressor off at 10pm.  Most of my closest neighbors are empty houses.  I've told the others to just tell me if I'm disturbing them.  They know that I will work all night pretty often, and to some extent, I think they appreciate somebody being up and on the lookout.  We've had some break ins and thefts in the last few years that have gone unsolved.The biggest thing is to stay on friendly terms.  I help them out when I can and have probably fixed something for everyone in town by now (small town, maybe 200 or so people).  When they have downed branches or their mower quits, or they need something hauled to the dump.  I wander over and do what I can.  I really try to stack up my noisy work during the day and concentrate on machining, painting, welding, and wrench turning at night.My name's not Jim....
Reply:I guess I'm lucky, all my neighbors are far enough away that the noise I make doesn't bother them. Reply:I usually try to get off the noisy stuff around 9. Friday night is different than a weekday though, I was out until almost 11 last night. Some of my neighbors have a habit of sending up mortars until about 2Am a few times a month though so the rest of us are conditioned a little. Whenever I think I'm being rude to the people around me I'll shut it down. I'm just tinkering and learning too. If I had a real project to work on all bets would be off. Oh and a grinder is a primary tool when you first start out. Reply:My barn is in my backyard, insulated pretty good. I have been out here 2 or 3 in the morning and every weekend morning around 5am. On a side note my one neighbor is an A-Hole and that's the way I have my Bluetooth sound bar facing. I might accidently turn the music even more and open the door when he is around...oops

Reply:I don't personally push it all and once nine hits I start getting cold sweats if I run the grinder or the cold saw too much.  Garage is cinder block.  Insulating doors are a good idea.  I'm sure insulting the walls would help too.And I hear you, I hate grinder noise too.  Good idea on the hack saw.  Then you can files to remove burrs (or a deburring tool).I'm just a hack.  Full-time computer job and creative hands on welding, etc at night.  Would like to work in the garage as long as possible. I tend to plan the project so that all welding and silent stuff is late night stuff.
Reply:We have "smart" meters up here on residential hydro services, also referred to as #*&%#&! meters by some people.  Prime time rates are almost double the nighttime rates and run from 700 am until 700 pm.  This is our clueless, corrupt provincial government trying to please all the green people in Toronto.  Rates in this province are so high that industries are shutting down and moving or going out of business, while no new companies will locate here.  Ontario has gone from  the richest of all Canadian provinces to a poor one.This causes a lot of people to start cooking dinner, bathing, doing laundry etc after 700 pm.  This includes senior citizens, poor people and cheap b**t**ds like me. This makes it hard to be quiet by 800 or 900 pm for the sake of the neighbours if you are trying to weld, grind, pound a hammer or run your compressor and power tools.Weekends and stat. holidays are all "off peak" hours, so I try to do most of the jobs at the house then, sure makes it hard to do much during the week though. I am voting with my feet, I've bought a property outside the city limits, won't have to worry about any neighbours out there (none nearby) once I get a place built and move there. Reply:With my garage closed up, nothing is really all that loud.  I've been out until midnight or later and you really can't hear much. Even my compressor running is no big deal.  The only thing I try to avoid running is my plasma table unless I can have the garage door open.  That's more to keep from smoking myself out instead of annoying the neighbors.  I usually like to make my late night projects the welding and machining portions.  I can tig and use the mill and lathe all night long if I want.  And I live in suburbia.
Reply:I'm on a corner lot so only 1 neighbor to deal with. I've asked if the noise bothers them and they seldom hear it. The fact that I clean the snow from their sidewalk with my garden tractor all winter, and help out with their small repair jobs probably influences it too.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:I don't think my  neighbors can even hear a gun shot. But when others are sleeping in the house I don't fire up the compressor or grinder unless I really need to for a couple minutes.
Reply:You definitely need to stay on your neighbors good side.I had one that cranked his motorcycle and stereo  up at night, if someone was loading his stuff up, the noise has damaged my vision.

Reply:Exactly why I moved to the country.  Unfortunately for the "neighbors" they built a housing tract 1/2 mile away but still in the middle of the country.  I had been in my 200+ year old house with a few hundred acres around me for a month or so. A buddy of mine comes over and we are shooting pistols since he just got a new one. Sheriff pulls up just as we were finishing after an hour or so, probably 8PM in January so DARK. I ask him what's wrong, he usually doesn't work this section so he doesn't know if there is a noise ordinance/quiet time but the neighborhood down the road called the complain.  We were done anyway so I didn't press him. I was at town hall the next day for permits, etc. I ask the clerk about the shooting/noise ordinance. She says "There is none beyond that your car has to have a muffler. You can do whatever the hell you want.
