I have a G8000 with an Onan engine, I have to put an oil seal on the crankcase, how hard is it to detach the engine from the bellhousing?
Reply:You will want to disconnect wires and cables and pull the stator, armature and engine as one chunk, then disassemble from there.
Reply:The stator is on the crank with a taper.   A long taper.  It will have to be pulled off.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Is there any technical literature on this machine besides the owners manual which doesn't tell you much?
Reply:I wish, even Lincoln service center classes don't test you tear down. You just figure out that the breakdown in the picture is the proper breakdown of the machine.
Reply:Lincoln has a rotor puller kit for getting the rotor off of the crankshaft.  It's in the parts list for the G8000.http://content.lincolnelectric.com//...parts/P211.pdfFolks use all kinds of other methods of getting the rotor off, like backing off the through-bolt and hitting it with a hammer.  I heard one guy had a bolt to fit the left hand thread in the rotor shaft.  He drilled the bolt and installed a grease fitting, then used a grease gun to apply high pressure and force the rotor free.Good luck,Bob
Reply:I used to work on ONAN 4500 watt 3 phase generators.  I whacked the daylights out of the rotors with a plastic hammer.  They came off. The rotor was open (shot), so nothing to loose.  It didn't hurt it, but not something I am going to recommend.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Well I bought this machine yesterday for $75. It was sitting in a puddle of oil. They told me it was the crankshaft seal was bad and would use about a quart of oil a day. After getting it home and inspecting it, the oil didn't seem to be coming from around the bellhousing. I started looking at the dipstick, which was lose, and it looked like the grommet gasket on the end was bad. I replaced the seal and it runs like a top. I tested the generator and it is putting out OK. I don't know if it welds right, it didn't come with leads. Is there any way to check the output without leads to see if it welds properly?
