Worth $650?http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/tls/2442774308.html
Reply:Appears to be an old South Bend Lathe. Not worth the $650 if the head stock bearings are out of it. If it has some low hours, possibly $500.If you have the ability to install new head stock bearings, offer the guy around $350 for it and call it a day. Also, check how much "slack" it has in the x & y feeds.
Reply:from the pics i dont see a worm gear on it, so i dont think it will cut threads... no way i'd give $650 for it, i'm with jontheturboguy, $400 tops maybe.... if you have some certain operation you want to do with it might make it more appealing, but i would put more money back and buy something a little bigger if you have the room..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:It looks like it's seen better days. I wouldn't take that lathe if they were paying me to haul it off, I've learned my lesson on old machinery.Powcon 400SM2-PD60 wire feedersMiller XR controlAlumapro push/pull gunSpeedglas 9100xBFH
Reply:It's a south bend and it may cut threads but it doesn't have a quick change gear box which means you'll have to sift through a stack of gears and change them around to get your desired speeds and feeds. I have a similar lathe but mine has longer ways, I wouldn't sell mine for $650 but I wouldn't give you $650 for it either. In the northeast that is a going rate for a used SB lathe but I think people are nuts.“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!”
Reply:ad says it works.. does anyone see a motor or belt?
Reply:Nope! It may be an old Southbend, but WOW--12" long??? I paid $325 for a Southbend 9" that's over 3' long (which I now have over $1200 in)  The nature of old tools...You better really want to tinker...I just can't imagine a 12" lathe being very useful ...a couple of hundred maybe.Which is just my opinion.
Reply:It will cut threads but as posted above, you'd have to dig up the change gear set. Also, lack of powerfeed leaves you with doing cuts manually or ,probably worse using half nut assembly  w/ lead screw. This means very light cuts and quicker wear ou of the half nuts(if they aren't gone already).I'd wait for a better deal
Reply:12" is way too short I have a 7x10 mini lathe, lol but within a week of getting it I I was wishing Id got something bigger..
Reply:Thanks for all the inputs.  I have an ENCO 3 in 1 (6  x 19 lathe) that I bought mainly to see if I wanted to get more into machining and to improve my skills.  The lathe is fine but I can see where it is under-powered and on the light weight side.  The mill leaves something to be desired but is usable.  So I am thinking that at some point I will be in the market for something larger.  I have seen a few older machines where the parts have been scattered and/or have fallen into neglect but the challenge to bring them up to operating condition looks pretty intimidating.  I have restored a few old woodworking tools including a 1953 Shopsmith but the metalworking tools are in a different category. So I will probably keep looking and asking for advise - thanks for your help.Steve
Reply:Stevewm, I'd pass on it at $650 for sure. I get my Twaiwanese Enco 10 X 36 for $350. It is a good quality lathe and does everything I need around the ranch. 12" is way to short. My 2 cents anyway.....Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:I have a 10x48 atlas and still there are times I run out of room. You get some part on there with an protrusion then the steady rest and a bunch of crap on the x feed and pretty soon you are down to a 8" work area on a 48" lathe.

Reply:I paid $600 for mine but it came steady rest, follow rest, two carriage stops, couple of dial indicators, a lever collet chuck, the table/stand, etc. It had a bad gear in the fwd/rev box which I upgraded to a quick change box anyhow and needed some other small things. Attachments and add ons DO add up quick, if you don't have any machining tools I would look to find a whole package deal with as much tooling as you can get with it.
