Reply:LOL - I was thinking the same thing.  It's for urban doomsday survival.  When SHTF, you can take it off and use it as a machete.

Reply:nope! cant take credit for this one boys, I have made a few Damascus knives but this one is made by a fella named Gillaume Cote, of Cote knives. I just thought I would share his work of art ! Last year (after many years) was the final straw with my "store bought" filleting knives that couldn't hold an edge. Problem solved!
Reply:Isn't the point of folder steel to make it flexible yet still hold an edge? Wouldn't a non folded steel blade be sharper, you probably don't need flexibility for gutting a fish.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:You need the flexibility for filleting fish though.
Reply:You will probably need a diamond stone for sharpening. Regular stones won't do.My cooking knives are the Classic Series made by Wusthof. Best production knives made.......and I would trade any of them for your knife. Probably the first time in 20 years that I have said that. That is gorgeous.

Reply:Did you make the blank of damascus or buy it? Also did it come in the blade shape if you bought it? It looks like Alabamas blanks to me. I have watched guy's make blanks that literally took days just for the blank, even with a power hammer. MikeGyver, my understanding of Damascus from blacksmithing days is it is the best of two worlds, you have super hard steel folded in with a milder steel to keep it from breaking. So the blade is hardened but either not tempered at all or tempered to a higher than normal hardness.  The microscopic layer of carbon between the layers almost lets it act serrated even though it is ground to a razor edge.  Every blank is different, they are beautiful for sure.  I have never understood damascus steel used for gun barrels though, anybody know why they make those, other than artistic reasons?
Reply:man, that's to pretty to stick a fish with it...There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:I have made pleanty of Damascus myself, however I haven't gone into the stainless side of things (like this fillet knife is) as its a whole new world of things to learn, that's I why I purchased this knife as I wanted something quality right off the bat, especially since its summer! I didn't go through just anyone who makes knives this guy is top notch. Making a proper filleting blade with the correct amount of flex/thickness and getting that super fine grind is an art in itself I may say day venture that way. Till then I will stick to making regular steel Damascus. The best way to describe Damascus blades, especially stainless variety if done properly..... you will not find a better blade material out there, when formulated correct it is by far the most superior blade when it comes to hardness/flexability with out breaking, and "memory" always returning to its original state. I wouldn't honestly be surprised if I have to sharpen this more than once a year, and as stated previously it does have to be done with a diamond stone which I have. the samurai sword is an excellent example of the quality of Damascus steels. However it seems less people are using it as its so expensive/time consuming to make. One blade I made with 210 folds, it took about 12 hrs to complete
Reply:How is the near repeating pattern layed out side by side like that?
Reply:you know VPT I would have to ask him what he does to create that pattern, his consistency is out of this world. Damascus is essentially unlimited when it comes to designs, for instance the last blade I made was a stack of 7 hammer welded into square bar, twisted and then re-folded and repeated. Haha best way to describe Damascus is like needing bread dough
Reply:I have watched and seen quite a bit of damascus projects, they are always very interesting and neat to see! I was curious about the knife because it looks like the guy made a 1x1" chunk and then piled it up on top of itself over and over again.
Reply:It sure looks nice. I never used many flexible blades on fish, but it helps alot when skinning a filet. I finally figerd I'ld buy a real filet knife one day, it's made by Forschner, which hasn't seen much if any use yet.I don't hardly fish anymore,  it makes me sad.(Here are some blades that get worn out!)https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=693045994066504 Attached ImagesCity of L.A. Reply:If I get back into blacksmithing as a hobby someday, has anyone found quality blanks of damascus? I saw some on ebay that were american made and looked to be good quality, but I havn't tried them yet. I tried to make my own twenty years ago, and it took days just for the blank of steel.
Reply:you certainly have to have the correct setup for making Damascus, a forge is completely nessecary to acquire the correct heat soak, I assure you it took me about 3 tries to figure out how to weld it properly and using the correct hammers and hammering technicque is critical. first tries yielded a few voids or pitts that weren't welded together correctly, looked HORRIBLE!! scrap bin! it sure would be nice to have a trip hammer, however it is a great work out for your forearms. You can buy blanks of Damascus in various sizes, however I would search overseas for the quality stuff. Sweden in particular. Be prepared for the price though!
Reply:There are several prominent Ebay sellers who just sell blanks, made in USA.  What opinions do people have on the best 2 steels for the best blade?  I don't think stainless is an option as was suggested.  Anyone putting that much time and money into a knife is going to keep it well oiled and cleaned anyway in my opinion. I thought Japanese samarui swords were made with just several layers, slightly different than folded damascus. I'd like to get back into knife making, It's been at least 20 years since I did any fun blacksmithing. I'd like to make a cutom knife for my fourth son who is going to Marines, following in his brothers footprints. Am I correct that they are hardened, but not drawn to a temper due to the milder steel backing the more brittle one? That knife is freaking gorgeous! Reply:price is 500CDN for the knife which is a steal as far as I am concerned, hes certainly not charging enough. and Bart, this is a stainless Damascus blade so no oiling required!
