I have a busted seal in my derelict fork truck. It is an old Yale with a two stage mast. I got one stage out and the other is stuck. I have pulled pretty good with a hoist but I don't plan on pulling any harder. To much force for what I am doing. I have the threaded sleeve off obviously but there is another section that I am wondering if it needs to come off. I would not think so but I am wondering; it is shown in the second photo. Next step I guess is to just take it to a cyl shop who has the right tools for it. Is there any chance this needs to come off too?Last edited by gow589; 06-21-2011 at 05:37 PM.
Reply:I have took apart nissan rams and they had a nut on top and a second underneith. Both were o-ringed. That sleeve u pointed out has to turn off or there's a nut inside.   ( something stops piston and ram from blowing apart. To me it looks like the sleeve turns off>Innovations are what i leave behind for History
Reply:I did get the nut off which is laying at the bottom of the cyl on the first photo. The sleeve in the second photo does not have a notch for a spanner like the nut so I am only guessing it does not need to be off but it doesn't seem to want to come out. I don't plan on pulling any harder with my set up so I am going to go by a cyl shop this afternoon. I need to come up with a manual for the truck but I can't even find an id tag. It is a back up truck which runs fine; obviously not as nice as the Mitsubishi I have with power steering which you can also see through the mast. This Yale seems to be from the flinstone era.
Reply:unless it wore the inside of the cylinder  and  theres now a lip    the pistons getting caught on  .  ur prolly right  ,just swing by a cylinder shop , im sure they have seen it all  .  good luck  . be sure to let us know  what the deal  was .   im curious now .>Innovations are what i leave behind for History
Reply:I will. You know it's always that one key piece of missing information right before you break something or hurt some one.
Reply:I had a pair of telescoping cylinders rebuilt for my old dump truck a few years ago and the situation was similiar to yours. The smaller tube came out of the larger, but the larger wouldn't come out of the main body. The result was the repair shop had to cut the bottom off the main tube, slide the rod out the bottom of the main body, replace seals, slide back in and reweld the end plates on. The "old timer" there said he hadn't seen cylinders like that in a long time. I suspect your cylinder requires the same operation.
Reply:From here, I'd guess that the circled items are a threaded  gland-nut and sleeve.Good Luck
Reply:The guy at the cyl shop said I just wasn't pulling hard enough. The rubber is probably chewed up and galling on the threads. He'll have it next week which is good enough for me.
