I had a very old sa200 that had a bad magneto. Not only was the magneto hard to find, it is also quite expensive to replace. Even the upgreade is not cheap. I hate wasting money so I devised a fix from spare parts I found at a local junk yard for less than $20. Some people would call this cobbling, I call it saving hard earned bucks. Parts needed:1 12volt coil from any older car or truck.1 ballast resistor.1 coil wire. What I did was drill a hole in the center of the cap of the existing magneto to the size of a coil wire but not all the way thru. Then push the coil wire thru the hole so that it makes contact with the carbon stud which contacts the top of the rotor button. Mount the coil within reach of the coil wire. Disconnect the wire from the magneto to the points. Run a wire from the output terminal of the voltage regulator or alternator to the ballast resistor an then on to the + or bat side of the coil. Run a wire from the - side of the coil to the points inside the magneto cap. Seal around the coil wire with some waterproof adhesive. Thats it, flip switch, start engine.Note: Be suer to use a ballast resistor in line to your coil as the full 12volts from your charging system will fry the points in short order and shorten the life of the coil. This resistor can be found on vehicles with point ignition.Last edited by mooseye; 03-23-2008 at 10:43 PM.Reason: left out a stepSA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1 RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!
Reply:Coils can be purchased with the resistor built in. Nice fixDavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor. |
